Why Napa wineries are so popular across the world?
Posted: Mar 16, 2019
The Napa Valley is just 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, but at last count it was home to nearly 490 Napa wineries. Fortunately, most of these are committed to sustainable winemaking: More than 68 percent of Napa wineries’ members participate in the Napa Green Certified Land and/or Napa Green Certified Winery programs, and more than 45 wineries have comprehensive Soil-to-Bottle certification in both.
Every year, people from all over the world flock to Napa Valley for its beautiful scenery, stately Napa Valley wineries, and acclaimed dining scene. As far as wine is concerned, Napa Valley has it in spades, delivering something for every type of wine lover, whether novice or enthusiast, collector or cult-wine seeker.
Whereas Napa grows several different grape varieties, there’s no denying that the most coveted grape — and the one that really put Napa Valley wineries on the map — is none other than cabernet sauvignon. We had teamed up with some of our winery partners to see what makes Napa Valley so special, why this Northern California wine region has become synonymous with it, and where to taste a few stellar examples.
Above 60% (more than 28,000 acres) of Napa Valley’s vineyard acreage is certified Napa Green Land. It’s clear that all of the vintners are highly committed stewards of the land and its resources for future generations of winemakers.
As per a renowned magazine, sustainable means a wide array of practices that are not only ecologically sound, but also economically viable and socially responsible. Within this general classification, there are several options:
1. Organic
An organic listing on a wine label means that one amongst 2 things: It’s either made of organically fully grown grapes, with none extra sulfites, or it’s made of certified organically fully grown grapes, avoiding all synthetic pesticides.
2. Biodynamic
Techniques under this method are similar to those of organic farming. They not only avoid use of synthetic chemicals, but also view Napa vineyards as an entire ecosystem, observing factors such as astrological influences and lunar cycles. These wines are also produced without common manipulations such as yeast additions or acidity adjustments.
3. LEED certification
The certification indicate that the winery itself has been built is operated in an ecologically sound manner. A program known as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and recognizes five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site progress (development), water savings, energy efficiency, material selection, and indoor environmental quality. Most Napa vineyards have this certificate or are in the process of obtaining one as I write this article.
