History of NAPA:

Napa Valley is an American viticultural area located in California, United States. It is one of the premier wines regions in the world. The story starts way back from the nineteenth century but the production of premium wine started in 1950’s. it is a home of more than 500 wineries. Napa valley is the house of wild red and white grapes. Grapes grew in large number there. George Calvert Yount was the first who planted Napa Valley grapes. Charles Krug was the first one to produce first commercial winery in early 1860’s. Charles Krug success motivated others and resulted in more than 140 wineries in operation.

Phylloxera impact on NAPA:

Napa Valley had to go through a tough time, including price controls, shortage of labor, bottles and trains for shipment, an outbreak of wine disease Phylloxera. The Phylloxera killed may wines in the Valley. Many wineries had to shut down. Business was slowed by huge numbers and the growth of industry become restricted. It took a few years for the vine industry in the valley to recover.

Start of tourism:

Napa Valley started welcoming the visitors in 1948. 700 graduates of Howard University were attended by the vintners in 1949 and 2000 guests from General Electric tasted the wine in 1952. It started the hospitality and marketing activities that focused the uniqueness of this small valley.

Earthquake 2014:

In 2014 Earthquake occurred in Napa. Economic losses are at $362 million according to the officials. About 120 wine and agricultural business suffered some damage. Luckily no one died but a few were slightly injured.

Stance today:

Today Napa Valley stands at a total area of 64.7 km sq. About 64% of the area is busy in producing vine. About 17 major varieties of vines are grown. Cabernet Sauvignon being the largest covering almost 513 acres. 4% of the California wine is produced in Napa and 90% of the Americans wine is produced in California. About 4.5 million people visit Napa Valley each year making it a popular tourist destination. Napa Valley was awarded as "The World's Best Wine and Food Destination" by trip advisors in 2010.
