There are times when eating certain category of foods later on trigger some problems. Though, there may be reason behind it but immediately identifying the food and the exact reason behind the problem is not at all easy. However, people often doubt these problems as either food allergy or food intolerance but knowing the exact cause requires some knowledge of both to make sure that the issue is handled in the right way. A food intolerance is a condition in which a person has difficulty digesting a particular food leading to symptoms like intestinal gas, abdominal pain or diarrhea. It is often confused with food allergy, however food intolerance involves the digestive system whereas food allergies involve the immune system. Food intolerance takes place in the digestive system and occurs when one is unable to breakdown the food either due to enzyme deficiencies, sensitivity to food additives or due to reactions to naturally occurring chemicals in foods.

Food intolerance is not as serious as food allergy and does not has the potential to lead to a serious or life threatening reaction. People intolerant to certain food can eat small amounts of the food without any adverse reactions or problems. Adverse food reactions are usually classified as food intolerance and is generally mediated by IgG class of antibodies. It is believed to be caused by increased gut permeability, which permits food substances to gain access to the circulation and trigger food specific IgG production. It is difficult to determine the food causing a food intolerance because the response usually takes place over a prolonged period of time. Food intolerance symptoms generally show about half an hour after eating or drinking the problematic food but symptoms sometimes may be delayed by up to 48 hours. Therefore to identify the specific food that might be the reason behind the problem, one must opt for the food intolerance test, the result of which will help to manage the symptoms.

Food intolerance symptoms vary greatly and is sometime mistaken for the food allergy symptoms. Eating a food that one is intolerant to can leave one feeling miserable and having a food that one is allergic to can lead to severe body's reaction and could even be life-threatening. In case of suspecting either food intolerance or food allergy, one must go for intolerance or allergy testing that help to identify the food component that might be causing the problem. Food intolerance are often associated with the following components found in the food:

Lactose - Lactose is a natural sugar found in dairy products like milk and cheese.

Gluten - It is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and even in some other grains.

Sulfites - A food additives found in wines, pickled foods and sodas

Fructose - It is a natural sugar found in fruits and in high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener used in soft drinks and processed foods like pastries and cereal.

FODMAPs - A carbohydrates that draw water into intestine during digestion. It is found in many plant foods like apples, honey, garlic and wheat.

In case of suspecting food intolerance, one must not immediately dive into any restrictive diet and must consult a dietitian or doctor, as food intolerance is not something to self diagnose. Food intolerant patients under doctor's supervision can also opt for food intolerance testing that measure up to 270 food proteins to find out food causing problem. The test results will help one to know about all the food items that one needs to avoid. Food intolerance testing needs more research and the testing companies must encourage their clients seeing a registered dietitian or a doctor, as they know to completely utilize the food intolerance test results.
