fatherhood coalition

Introduction

Our society has many different opinions and specifications on the on breaking down what it means to be male or female. Professional sports strain gender differences. Gender roles are communal and behavioral norms that dictate how a particular sex’s character. They decide what the society considers socially appropriate for an individual. The paper discusses how gender roles influence father’s rights in America today. Father’s right is a broad topic covering many issues such as divorce, parenting, and child custody among others. The essay outlines two organizations with conflicting opinions on father’s rights.

Fatherhood Coalition

The first organization discussed in this essay is the Fatherhood Coalition formerly known as the Coalition for the Preservation of Fatherhood (CPF). A small group of non-custodial fathers meeting in Arlington created this group in December 1993. The organization deals with all matters involving or affecting father- child relationships. Its aim is to create equal parenting rights for men and women. The organization obtains funding from several sources. It obtains resources through the provision of professional legal advice and representation. The organization also obtains funding from donations given to the organization. Membership in the organization also finances the organization. The organization has very many members. The highest percentage of members is fathers facing child custodial problems and also those that get oppressed during the divorce process. There are very few married father members or those that have a successful divorce.

National Organization for Women New York

The second organization discussed is the National Organization for Women New York (NOW NYC). A group of women including Betty Friedan and Pauli Murray created the national organization of women (NOW) in 1966. The organization advocates for the rights of women and girls of New York City through many methods. The organization obtains funds through donations made by people. It also acquires funding from the provision of legal advice and also legal representation. It also acquires finances from membership. The organization has many members and accepts membership from women troubled with issues of prejudice. It has a very small turn out for women in successful marriages.

Gender Issues

The Fatherhood coalition’s major concern is fatherlessness created by the justice system. The organization focuses on how the laws and policies of the nation promote fatherlessness and work to reverse this situation. The organization also deals with the rights of fathers in divorce and child custody that the system might overlook. It focuses on the incentives that eliminate one parent (normally father) during custodial battles. It also tackles domestic violence especially the commonly ignored female aggression. It also deals with child support where the system takes money from the no custodial parent (mostly men) and gives it to the custodial parent (mostly women) who uses it however they like. NOW NYC works to promote reproductive rights, secure women’s economic empowerment and end discrimination and violence against women.

The most controversial bill that creates dispute between these two organizations is the domestic relation bill. An act to amend the relations law is creating disagreement between both institutions. The goal of this amendment is to establish shared parenting. Fatherhood Coalition is among the many father’s rights groups in the forefront of the push for legislations favoring joint custody. NOW NYC favors a primary caregiver (usually the mother) based on the presumption that they will ensure solidity and durability of care for children. The organization also focuses on gender violence against women and ignores the possibility of gender violence against men. Gender roles created traditionally believe that women are the better parents for children and they should maintain custody of children in case of divorce or separation. The introduction of this bill reduces discrimination against the not custodial stakeholders normally the men. It is imminent that the justice system favors the women over men during custodial battles as such depriving men of their rights as parents to the children.

Conclusion

Gender roles created in society are affecting every institution in the community. The development of human rights and equality create systems that conflict with these positions. It is imminent that the rights of fathers in USA and other states are normally overlooked. It is also definite that the world is focusing on the empowerment of women over the expense of men and fathers rights. I recommend that governmental and non-governmental institutions advocate gender equality rather than powering one gender. It will provide positive outcomes for the society.
