How to port your number to another phone company

Posted: Apr 07, 2019
Are you dissatisfied with your postpaid service provider and wish to try another brand? You can port your current number to another provider quite easily. This article explains the number porting process.
The thing about a competitive marketplace is, you can demand better services and products and service providers will rush to assist you. After all, competition among sectors like banking, insurance and telecom is quite fierce. A customer lost is lost forever, and it can be a major challenge to bring a disgruntled customer back into the fold.
But it’s a win-win situation for customers. If you are dissatisfied with a product or service, you can simply choose another brand that has a better range of offerings. This is especially true of the mobile telecom sector. If your current provider is not offering the high standards of service and great plans, then you can port your number to another provider that does.
The port number process is also fairly simple. The following section outlines the steps involved.
Port your number to another provider: Essential steps
- Start the number porting process by SMSing PORT to 1900. 1900 is the nodal porting number for TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India). It is best to initiate the process this way, instead of asking for your current service provider to do so – it might cause delays, especially since your current provider will try hard to retain your patronage.
- You will receive a ‘porting code’ on an SMS from TRAI. Do not delete this message – it will help the new provider and your current service provider to process your porting request. The porting request is sent to your current service provider, who will call to discuss the process with you. The request is also sent to the new provider from your current one, or you can approach the next provider yourself.
- Some service providers ask customers to fill out a porting migration form, which is sent on email or collected from the nearest mobile store. Others will simply process the request and send a confirmation SMS.
- Go to the nearest store with your ID proof (Aadhaar card/PAN card and proof of residence). Also take along a copy of the porting form if you have filled it out.
- Take a look at the prepaid and postpaid plans by the new provider. Select whether you wish to have a prepaid or a postpaid connection, and also the pack or monthly plan that is most suitable to you. At this stage, the provider will give you a new SIM card, but it is not activated yet.
- Once your documents are verified, the new SIM card is activated. Meanwhile, the current service provider starts the process of disconnecting their services. You will receive a message from them informing you of disconnection. At this point, you can remove the old SIM card and insert the new one.
- Follow the set up process for the new SIM card. You can start using it from this point on. The number porting process is now complete.
