How to Prepare for Design Entrance Exam

If you are preparing for the National Institute of Design (NID) entrance exam, this blog post will guide you on what you need to know to get yourself prepared and to achieve success.
NID is an entrance examination designed for aspirants who need to gain admission into NID to study design programme (B.Des). It is also referred to as Design Aptitude Test (DAT).
It is a 3 hours exam which is usually followed by a studio test and a personal interview. Apart from your design skill and creativity, knowing few practical tips will go a long way in helping you prepare for the design entrance exam.
So, without wasting much of your time, here are 5 tips to help you crack NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT).
1. Observation and Visualization Skills
The main purpose of this exam is to test the observation and creativity of the aspirant in terms of design. Aside that, NID questions are also structured in a way to test for general knowledge, imaginative skills and visualization as well.
So, even if you are good in sketching, it is not a guarantee you will be able to crack the entrance exam.
NID is all about balance skills. Being good at sketching is just one pieces of the puzzle. Just be prepare for questions that will test your creativity and sketching skills. Stay highly creative in the way you provide answers to questions.
2. Speed is Essential
You stand to lose marks for questions you fail to provide answers to and the ones you didn't answer completely. So, you must work on improving your speed. This will enable you answer all the questions on time.
Don't waste time erasing and redrawing, you may not have sufficient time for that. To avoid that, draw with a light hand focusing majorly on outlining first.
After you have gotten the outline and dimensions you want, you can then finalize the drawing by including other details.
3. Solve Old Past Questions
If it is possible for you, try to get your hands on old sample questions and practice them as much as you can. This will give you an idea on the kind of questions usually set in the exam.
Also try to set the required time limit for yourself and see if you can finish on time. This will increase your speed to a great extent. Solving old questions will help you know the sequence you should answer questions in different sections.
4. Improve General Knowledge
You don't need to focus too much on general knowledge books. But, just be aware of current happenings. Spend time reading newspapers and listening to news. Also, read books/magazines on fashion and design.
Know the names of people who have contributed in this challenging field. These are the areas questions can likely come from.
5. Be Optimistic
Try to motivate yourself. This is very important. When you are optimistic about the outcome of the exam, you will be at ease and will focus more without any pressure from anywhere.
