A California Notary Public is a public official who attests or certifies writings such as deeds to make them legally authentic and perform certain other acts throughout the state and is appointed to serve the public as an impartial witness. To be eligible for appointment as a General Notary Public, the individual must: 1) be a legal resident of the State of California. 2) At least 18 years of age 3) complete a six-hour course of study either online or classroom certification 4. Duties of a Commissioned Notary Public

It is the duty of the California notary public, upon the payment of any fees, if applicable, to notarize upon request any properly submitted document for any person, anywhere in the State of California. A notary public is prohibited from practicing law, unless the notary public is also a licensed California attorney. It is very important to remember that a non-attorney notary public cannot undertake any acts that constitute the practice of the law.
