Greece: Airport Shuttles By Region
Posted: Jun 14, 2014
Like most of its Mediterranean neighbours – Italy and Spain come to mind – Greece is a perpetually popular destination among tourists, both from Europe and further afield. As such, despite its relatively small dimensions, the Hellenic country possesses a high density of airports, which aim to serve the different regions tourists tend to flock to, and provide transportation for the high volume of foreigners that arrive each year in Greece. Airport shuttles are not, therefore, an uncommon sight on the country’s roads, as they constantly criss-cross the roads, headed to and from a variety of destinations.
Of course, this density tends to be greater in larger towns, particularly the capital Athens, but really, in Greece, airport shuttles hail from all over. Below are a few of the most popular destinations and airports they are likely to emanate from or be taking passengers to.
The Large Towns
As noted above, transport density tends to be larger in the two main Greek towns. This phenomenon is nothing new, and is in fact quite common in other major capitals around the world - so it is unsurprising that Athens and Thessaloniki account for the brunt of airport transfers here. The capital’s airport is the busiest in the country, as a large number of tourists each season are attracted to Athens’s plentiful monuments and museums, as well as its atmosphere of culture. Thessaloniki, on the other hand, is a gateway to the northern part of Greece. Airport shuttles therefore operate with predictable regularity from both these locations, some taking tourists into the capital, others to the beach resorts on the Mediterranean coast or the least explored north side of the country.
The Smaller Airports
Aside from the two main hubs in Athens and Thessaloniki, the country also boasts a number of smaller ports dotted all over its landscape. Most of these are local and served by domestic or chartered flights, but a few are worthy of mention, even if they do not compare to the two main ones in size.
One of the busiest infra-structures of this type, for instance, is Heraklion airport. While technically not in the Greek mainland – it is located in Crete, an island off the coast – this site is usually included on the same list as the continent-side ones, and accounts for a large percentage of the region’s air traffic. Chania, also in Crete, is another place from which a considerable number of transfers depart each day, helping boost up the rankings for the country as a whole. Kalamata and Corfu are some of the others relatively noteworthy sites from which to arrive and transfer.
As you can see, for tourists visiting Greece, airport shuttles will not be hard to procure – regardless of which region they happen to service.
