In the list of world walking holiday destinations, Morocco may not be particularly highly placed. The country is mostly known for its vast expanses of desert and generally flat nature, which is not exactly inviting for avid trekkers looking for new challenges.

However, despite first impressions, this North African country does indeed offer something for fans of hiking. Although not in abundance, challenging walks do exist throughout the country, with most of them being centred in the High Atlas mountain range, a sort of Mecca for tourists visiting Morocco. Walking the trails in this fascinating region is a highlight of any itinerary.

A Millennia-Old Divider

The High Atlas mountain range is the country's main location for mountain hiking and trekking. This mountain range stretches from the Atlantic, straddling the borderlines of Algeria, and includes some of the highest peaks found on either country. Geographically, it serves as a sort of divider, separating the desert climate of the Sahara region from the more temperate, Mediterranean weather found in the country's urbanised areas.

For history buffs visiting Morocco, walking holidays in this region can reveal some fascinating stories. Some of the formations found amongst these peaks – particularly in the western region – hark back to prehistoric times, with many dating back to the Cretaceous and Jurassic period. Archaeology enthusiasts may also get a thrill from following in the footsteps of dinosaurs and other creatures that inhabited these regions millennia ago. The western region will also be of particular interest to wildlife aficionados, as it is the only place in the world where the rare and endangered Barbary Macaque can still be found in the wild.

Mountaintop Thrills

For a true hiking experience in Morocco, walking enthusiasts craving a challenge will undoubtedly appreciate the chance to tackle the J’Bel Toubkal, the highest mountain in the range, as well as visiting the verdant National Park in which it sits. Elsewhere, the spine-tingling High Atlas passes will give satisfy even the most hardened of adrenalin junkies, as well as constitute one of the most challenging walks the country has to offer. For history and culture buffs, the sporadic Kasbahs (or castles) found among the peaks – some of which are still in use – will likely be the main attraction.

Whatever a visitor's preference, however, the fact remains that the High Atlas Mountains are the country's best place to enjoy some true active culture while in Morocco. Walking holidays to this region are becoming more and more popular, and it's not hard to see why.
