India is well known for its fantastic cuisine and colourful culture - not to mention such famous monuments as the Taj Mahal. But while many tourists head to the major cities to explore, there are also those who prefer to be more "at one" with nature; fortunately, for them, the country is rising in popularity when it comes to trekking holidays. Perhaps largely unknown to those travellers who visit only the cities, India has countless hiking destinations to explore, which offer breath taking views and fabulous experiences. Anyone looking to discover India from a unique perspective should definitely check out the following places.

Chopta Chandrashila

Uttarakhand, where Chandrashila is located, is often referred to as the "Land of the Gods", due to the many pilgrimage destinations for trekking holidays, and the amount of stunning Hindu temples. But more than that, the state is also known for summits where you can enjoy visions of the Himalayas, which can be seen from the top of Chandrashila. Literally translated as "Moon Rock", Chandrashila stands at 4,000 metres above sea level and offers hikers a magnificent view of the Himalayas beyond. The truly awesome panoramic views make Chopta Chandrashila a must-visit destination for adventurous travellers to India. The best part about the Chandrashila trek is that even beginners can take it on, as the difficulty level is rated as easy to moderate.

Lake Dodital

Many people who visit India aim to achieve a spiritual experience as well. While trekking holidays may not be something considered as a spiritual journey, given the right destination, they can be. One such place is Lake Dodital in Uttarakhand. Lake Dodital is a freshwater lake located in Northern India, in the state of Uttarakhand. To reach the lake, hikers undertake a gentle overnight trek through Sangamchatti, spend the night first at Bebra or Agora and then continue with the second leg in the morning. Guided hikes typically provide travellers with options for where to spend the night, so that won't be a problem. Moreover, the effort will be worth it upon arriving at Lake Dodital; it possesses an almost unbearable beauty and it is here, according to legend, where the Hindu god Ganesha lived.

Kudremukh

For more adventurous travellers who want to take their trekking holidays up a notch, the Kudremukh hike is an ideal option. Located in Karnataka, in southwest India, the mountain range is a challenging but enjoyable trek that rewards with a fantastic view and the Hanumana Gundi Watefalls. With hikes to the peak scheduled from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm only, guided tours need to book early to ensure permission. There are 13 different routes to choose from, according to difficulty, so there is something for both experienced hikers and beginners.
