With the dawn of the internet, and development of gigantic search engine services like Google, Bing and Yahoo that carry out millions or possibly billions of searches every day, a new behaviour has emerged where people have come to rely on and trust the searches that the Google algorithm returns.
As an example if you were to carry out a Google search for "best dentist in your town" then it is likely that you would place some measure of trust in the businesses that place at the top of the search results for this phrase, simply because Google says so. It is more of a subconscious than a conscious decision which is likely to make this new behaviour paradigm so many times more powerful for businesses who understand how to rank in the search engine for the most relevant and profitable products and services related to their business.
Effective search engine optimisation and Google Adwords are very powerful methods of advertising because they become the answers to a question. This is known as intentional marketing or advertising. For instance, if someone has a query that they type into Google, then it likely that they will trust the answers returned by Google, and so if you place on the first page on a search for "best dentist in your town" then there is a reasonable chance that you will get the call, whether you feature in the organic results section, the local maps listings or even the paid or sponsored ads.
The important part is that your business is showing up in response to a query as a possible match or solution for the searchers issue.
Very generally, digital marketing does not have the same power, and while you can target specific sections of the market based on age, occupation, marital status, interests and so on, this does not mean that the person viewing the advert is looking for that solution right now.
However, digital marketing does possess a number of unique marketing benefits that search engine optimisation will not, including remarketing where once a person engages or interacts with your online assets, whether your website or an advert that your ads will have the ability to follow that user around the internet, so that particular user could see your ads everywhere that they go online for the next month. And as traditional advertising teaches, the more times that they see your ad the greater the likelihood that they will buy.
