If you’re a new business you’re going to have lots of set up costs including premises, stock, cash registers, vehicles and so on. The reality is you’re likely to spend a lot of money before you make a single dollar or pound. And against that backdrop asking the question "is it worth it?" when someone phones or emails you to talk about their SEO services is a very sensible question.

At Birmingham SEO Agency we normally begin by showing prospects an example, that goes something like this.

CLIENT VALUE

If you were a law firm first thing that we need to do is to estimate client value. Now we know that a lot of clients will stay with the same law firm for many years and will use that law firm multiple times, but let’s say to keep things simple that the value of a client to a law firm in Birmingham is £500.

ONLINE DEMAND FOR SERVICE

If we do a very simple search on the Google Keyword Planner, we can see that the search "Birmingham Solicitors" gets carried out 2,400 times per month. Industry best practice tells us that the top ranked websites for any given search phrase can get up to 40% of the online traffic for that search phrase. So in this example 2,400 searches a month multiplied by 40% is 960 clicks a month.

Assuming that these clicks are reasonably serious or interested because they’re searching for a service "solicitors" in a location "Birmingham" we would guess that there will be business to done with these online searchers.

CONVERSION

It really depends on how the website looks and how it has been organised to convert visitors into leads or enquiries and then sales, however if we assume a 10% conversion on visits to the website that could potentially mean up to 96 new clients per month for the law firm. If however, the website only converted at 5% then perhaps the law firm would win 48 new clients per month.

Going back to our client value at £500, 48 new clients for the law firm could potentially yield £24,000 in fees and 96 new clients per month could potentially translate to almost £50,000 per in new business.

We would stress that the examples above are only that, and your business may win more or less traffic, and convert more or less website visitors into leads and then sales.

ROI

In terms of assessing whether or not that it is worth it, we would say lets have a chat to figure that out, however if you were paying £2,500 for £24,000 in new business each month, or £5,000 per month for somewhere in the region of £50,000 per month then most businesses would see the value in search engine optimisation.

If however, your business is on the edge and has a hard time paying the electric bill or buying stamps, then perhaps search engine optimisation will be a stretch too far for your business at this time.
