Holidays to Sardinia – Something For Everyone

If you research holidays to Sardinia, you will quickly discover just how much of a gem this Mediterranean island really is. Located just off the coast of Italy, this island has a culture and a heritage all of its own. Very much untouched by the effects of tourism, the island retains much of its charm, and many of its long-standing traditions have stood the test of time for centuries. Not only that, the island is stunningly beautiful, with endless white sandy beaches and many sheltered bays lapped by crystal clear, glittering waters. There is no doubt that your holidays to Sardinia, no matter how you choose to spend them, will be memorable and very special.

Introducing the island

The island is, in fact, closer to Africa than it is to Italy, and although the cuisine in places reflects this close proximity, the culture is very much European. The beaches are considered among the best in Europe and, for avid beachgoers, Sant’Antioco and San Pietro, both small islands lying just off the coast boast the best and most unspoiled of all.

The north east coast, the Costa Smeralda, is full of glitz and glamour, and for those wanting a touch of luxury and a centre based break, this is the place to go. Some may say this resort-orientated coastline is a little soulless, but for others seeking the sun it is perfect. Over to the east, the Archipelago di la Maddalena is just as stunning but offers a more relaxed vibe and is a great place for families. The islands are part of a national park, so the wildlife and scenery are protected for everyone to enjoy.

Holidays to Sardinia do not have to be based on the coast, as the interior of the island is equally as interesting. The mountainous peaks are covered with lush forests and there are vineyards and citrus groves as far as the eye can see in many places. Cattle and sheep are grazed freely on the island and are the main source of income for many cheese producers.

There are some charming little towns to visit on the island too, with Bosa, Oristano and Alghero standing out. The latter has an interesting history that is very Catalan focused, and is a pretty town to wander around, while Oristano is a quiet, traditional and extremely traditional town. Calgiari is also worth a visit, and is a great place if you are looking for a more cosmopolitan feel.

The island also has a mysterious side and all over the landscape are bizarre conical stone buildings, believed to have been built as defensive structures. Tombs, temples and other prehistoric ruins that date back the Bronze Age also make for interesting exploration.

Holidays to Sardinia are great at any time of the year, but for superb weather with the least rainfall, the months between May and September are best.
