The American economy is has been on fire for the past couple of years and is continuing to surge forward. Because of record-low unemployment, some people are finally willing to go out on a limb and test the job market because they see so many of their peers getting hired left and right, with some of those peers having comparable skills and now making more money. Though the reasons people make the choice to look for a new job vary widely, one thing that all job-seekers have in common is that early on in the job-seeking process they will need to update their resume to make it as good as they can.

Writing a good resume does not come naturally to everyone, however, and it can be even more difficult for people who haven’t updated their resume in a long time. Fortunately there are some people who are skilled at writing good resumes and willing to share their insight, which is no doubt why you are here. Below are some tips for writing a good resume that will catch recruiters’ or HR managers’ eyes, whether you’re looking for antenna jobs, healthcare jobs, manufacturing jobs, and anything in between.

It is helpful if the first thing you do is choose a clear objective when it comes to your job search. What are all of the particular details of the new job you want? Having a clear objective in mind prior to writing your resume will help you stay focused and avoid writing a resume that is unfocused or not interesting. Next, consider writing your resume to obtain an interview, not the job itself. What does this mean? It means to not go into too much detail in your resume, which may bore those reading it or the content may go over their head. Use the interview to go into more detail and explain your accomplishments. It is also helpful to use many action words within your resume to give it more life than the other ones it may be competing against.

Use bulleted sentences that begin with action words like supervised, initiated, integrated, diagnosed, or verified. Because so many resumes are flying around and companies typically receive many per each job opening, HR personnel looking through resumes have to do so fast, which means spending little time on each resume (at least initially). This means it is a good idea to put your strengths or most impressive things about you or your work history at the beginning of the resume, in hopes that it gets read and not missed because the person reading the resume stopped reading earlier on and threw the resume away already.

When possible, list anyone significant in the field where you are job-hunting on your resume if you know them or have worked with them. What you know matters too, but having someone vouch for you, especially someone well-respected, is always a good thing. Lastly, make sure to get your resume read by someone who is good at proofing or experienced in reading through resumes (or more than one person if possible). This is basically a dress-rehearsal for the big show and you want to be ready! Good luck!
