Posted: Jun 21, 2014

Don’t have a friend, partner or family to with you on a weekend getaway? Don’t let that stop you from taking some down time! There are plenty of fun things you can do to enjoy a getaway on your own. The positive to this is that you’ll get a chance to meet new people, even if you’re not a particularly outgoing person. And you don’t have to travel with a singles group either. Besides, there are few weekend single-person focused excursions.
The pros of solo travel, even on a weekend excursion, are that you can do exclusively what interests you. You don’t need to plan around the interests of a family or a partner. You decide where to eat and whether or not you want to splurge. You can get up and go at the last minute without having to wait for another person to pack up. There is no negotiating with someone else as to what to do during a particular day.
The same pros can hold true for a simpler getaway like a weekend solo camping trip. An additional pro to a solo camping trip could be the quietness of the woods that allows you to focus your mind. In the peace and quiet of the forest, you’ll become more keenly aware of the world around you giving your brain a break from the constant interaction with other people. A solo camping trip, if done properly, can be rejuvenating.
The downside to solo camping is that extra planning needs to be taken if you’re taking off into the backwoods. Proper planning and safety precautions need to be taken.
Make sure you’ve studying a topographic map of the area you’d like to camp in. There’s not going to be anybody to ask where the water is and what reference marks you should follow, so before you begin exploring the area, know all the water sources, alternate trail routes, geography and reference landmarks. Keep track of the way weather conditions and trail conditions are usually during the time you’d like to take your solo camping trip.
If you’re camping solo for the first time, it’s a better idea to camp in an area you’ve been before with other people. It’ll be less stressful camping in a familiar area.
When hiking, keep in mind that the average person covers one mile every thirty minutes. If you’re on your own, you may end up walking slower or faster than this. Take this into account when determining places to camp for the night.
Don’t schedule yourself so tightly that you won’t be able to reach the next destination before nightfall. Keep track of sunrise and sunset schedules and always stop when there’s still plenty of light. You want to be properly set up during daylight since starting a fire or setting up a tent in the dark is even more stressful when doing it on your own.
