Just an hour from Seoul city is the peculiar yet unique land with a misnomer. You can see kilometers of spiked wires, the area that is most heavily fortified in the world. South and North Korea set up a border as per the armistice of 1953 that divided the peninsula into half. The barbed wired division indicates the DMZ or the Demilitarized Zone which has become a popular tourist destination.

Introducing a Korea Trip

An organized DMZ tour is recommended for travelers rather than driving down on your own. A guided tour will offer a great history lesson and you will not be stopped unnecessarily at checkpoints. The Panmunjom is the one and only place visitors are allowed in the zone. It appears somewhat surreal; something even more strange is the sophisticated train station which is almost empty except for tourists. The only road connecting the south and north of Korea is the road in the center of the demilitarized zone. The historic Armistice Agreement between the United Nations Command or UNC and the Communist Forces took place here in 1953. This is a popular tourist attraction and packaged tours of 4-5 days have to be booked in advance.

The United Services Organization Tour

With U.S troops stationed in the area, the USO or the United Services Organizations, a non-profit organization provides recreational services and morale to the U.S military. The USO tour alone provides access to the conference row region where the North and South Koreas hold meetings. In 1978, South Korea discovered the contentious ‘Third Infiltration Tunnel.’ The ‘Dora Observatory’ is another spot that travelers try to see the gigantic North Korea Flag. The ultramodern ‘Dorasan Station’ is literally empty. ‘Freedom House’ is another traveler’s spot. The JSA or Joint Security Area in Panmunjom is a historical military complex. Here, visitors can feel the tragic results of the war.

Unsettled Peace

A USO DMZ tour will give you a glimpse of the supposedly dangerous place in the world. Technically, this may be true because the hillsides and mountains separating the 2 Koreas are heavily guarded, bristling with troops. Yet, the region is literally an irony; as you look around from one of the checkpoints, you will be awestruck by the absolute tranquility prevailing in the region. The unsettled peace that prevails in the verdant green hillsides is truly an irony. When you see rare birds plunging the untouched marshlands, you wonder if this is a war-torn land or one of absolute peace. While in Panmunjom, you can see the Imjingak Park and the stunning rivers and mountains of Cheorwon that offer you a real peek into the history as well as the culture of Korea.
