A number of educators and industry experts in Australia expressed their opinion that immigration targets should not be lowered. Professor McDonald, faculty of demography at the University of Melbourne, has opined that the current government has made an error in cutting the immigration targets for the current year. Speaking at the Infrastructure Summit by the Australian Financial Review, he offered his view that more immigration is needed mainly for the skilled and unskilled immigration categories. There is definitely more scope for immigration under the Visa 190 Australia stream for skilled immigrants.

The reduction in the targets for immigration, which was put in place to ease congestion in the metropolitan cities such as Melbourne and Sydney as not serving its purpose. According to the professor, nearly 10,000 of the reduced immigration targets would have probably opted to settle in the bigger cities, and with the reduced immigration target, the cities are likely to face a labor crisis as the demand for labor would be very strong.

More Demand for Skilled Immigrant Visas Such As Visa 190 Australia

There is an increasing demand for immigrants who are opting to enter Australia under skilled immigrant visas such as visa 190 Australia. There is a shortage of skilled labor as many of the people who were part of the baby boomers generation are set to retire, leaving a labor gap in various critical and non-critical industries. There is also a demand for immigrant workers in the unskilled category as there is a shortage of labor in that category as well. Professor Mc Donald also expressed his concerns regarding the shortage in the unskilled sector and said that measures needed to be taken to address that issue.

Australia has undergone dramatic changes ever since the end of the boom in the mining sector, during which more workers chose to settle in cities like Sydney and Melbourne as opposed to cities such as Perth and Brisbane. The increased interest in big cities, helped Australia to cement its place as a global powerhouse. The absence of the big cities such as Melbourne and Sydney would have caused the country to be regarded as a mediocre country for immigration. In fact it would have been reduced to the status of an international backwater. A country needs big and dramatic places to attract interest from international community, Professor McDonald opined.

Speaking at the same summit, the chief executive for Infrastructure Australia, Romilly Madew, expressed his opinion that infrastructure projects had to be planned with utmost care in order to ensure that they were properly aligned and instep with the population growth in Australia. This would help cities to maintain their status quo and remain liveable. Inputs about managing increased population on account of immigration was also shared by the program director for transport and cities at the Grattan Institute, Marion Terrill, who shared that the big cities were the strong points and powerhouses of the country’s wealth and that lawmakers should not get so caught up in addressing the issue of congestion, that it comes at the cost of neglecting the bigger cities.

The experts were of the opinion that Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s move to focus more on immigration to the rural areas of Australia, and reduce immigration to cities would be detrimental to the country’s economic growth.
