The exact origin of this mountain is still unknown, but it is believed to have been known by the name 'al-Amin' during the times when this particular region was inhabited by pagan Arabs. Another legend states that it was the place where the first of men stayed and were buried after they died. The Islamic traditions state that this is the place where Prophet Muhammad had shown pagans the miracle of the 'splitting of the moon'.
