every student

A class consists of various types of students; some can keep up with what is being taught in the class, while others need some time to catch up and grasp with everything that is being gone on in class. As a teacher, it falls in your responsibility, to take care of the fact that every student is getting equal attention. And as long as you can include every student in your teaching process, you are successful as a teacher. But sometimes it so happens that there are individual students in your class who are differently abled and so they actually cannot grasp conventional methods of teachings. So for them, you need to apply some other way.

Types Of Disabilities You Can Face

These are the following disabilities you can face:

  • Hearing: Loss
  • Low vision or blindness
  • Learning disabilities such as dyslexia
  • Mobility disabilities
  • Epilepsy, Crohn’s disease
  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, mood swings, anxiety.
  • Asperger’s disorder and autism
  • Traumatic brain injury

Steps You Can Take

These are the steps you can take to help such students without segregating them in class:

  • Approach such students and make them feel comfortable so that they are free to discuss any problem with you. They should not be afraid or hesitant to come up to you with any problem, because any hesitation or doubt might lead them to not come to you at all.
  • You should draw out the syllabus in a method which is easily understood along with a detailed course syllabus. Make these available to students before registration.
  • If course materials are to be read online, then edit them big fonts, colors, and formats that can be easily read and comprehended by students with low vision or color blindness.
  • If your office cannot be privately accessed, then arrange to meet in a place which is comfortable for all.
  • On the very first day of the session, prepare a questionnaire which students can fill in with their details, and end it with a question like is there anything you would like to share with me. This might help students to disclose important issues about you.
  • Plan out on such activities, in which all students need to participate in classroom activities, and that is precisely how the
leadership for educational equity should be.

Just because a student is suffering from a particular problem, does not imply that he or she needs to be segregated from class. Include them in all the activities that go on the level and modify them or go that extra mile to make them understand what is going in class. So for them, you need to apply the above mentioned way.
