Calgary Stampede
A trip to Calgary wouldn’t be the same without experiencing the Calgary Stampede. Held every July, this iconic 10 day festival is dedicated to the city’s traditional western cowboy culture. Heritage Park Historical Village
This living museum houses a remodelled village that depicts various time periods of Alberta’s past and preserves the distinct cultural heritage of Western Canada. There is a series of original historical homes that have been relocated here and recreations of other old monuments, as well as 50,000 artifacts which represent daily life in Western Canada in the 18th and 19th century. There’s also an old steam train that takes you around the park, and a museum displaying vintage vehicles.
Glenbow Museum
The Glenbow Museum is a significant cultural hub of Calgary with an interesting collection of artifacts and artworks from the 19th century-present, as well as a library and archives collection, all telling a captivating story of Western Canada’s heritage. Highlights include First Nations artifacts, military objects and a colourful mineral exhibit. If you’re lucky, you might get to visit the Glenbow Museum during a cultural event.
The Military Museums
The Military Museums is Western Canada’s largest tri-service museum and the country’s second largest military museum, telling stories about wars that Canada was involved in and weapons that were used. The institution comprises of museums, galleries and a library and archives. You can explore well-preserved memorabilia, realistic model re-enactments, interactive displays, life sized dioramas and contemporary art at the Military Museums, and the latest attraction here is the Cold War Exhibit, which is dedicated to Canada’s Cold War.
Esker Foundation
The privately owned Esker Foundation gallery is dedicated to contemporary art with a series of interesting exhibitions, publications and programmes. The gallery features the immense Project Space programme, a cultural platform which invites both established and emerging artists to create modern exhibitions that reflect on Calgary’s local cultures. Many exhibitions here change on a regular basis, and the building itself is a work of art.
