It is exciting to open a new chapter of your life when you move to a new country at a new age. At the same time, it involves some expectations from self and some anxieties about the environment that awaits you.

If you have won a soccer scholarship in USA and are moving from the UK to America for university education, dorm rooms will be a significant part of your life. Students spend much time in these rooms. You may be lucky to get a separate space for yourself or may have to share it with other students, but when you are moving to a new zone, it is important to be prepared. You must pack sufficiently and judiciously.

The first thing is to prepare a list of things that you should have with you for the flight from the UK to US. The important documents should always be in your possession – do not pack them into the check-in luggage. These include your passport, student visa, college admission confirmation letter, letters of recommendation and confirming your soccer scholarship in America, medical certificates, other health related documents and ID proofs.

Ensure that the original documents are kept neatly in a separate folder and make a few extra copies or better still, scan them so they are always with you in a device or in cloud.

The US is much larger than Britain in terms of geographical spread and climate differs across states. If you are moving to a college in Florida, expect hot and humid conditions. And if your university is in states such as North Dakota, South Dakota, Michigan or Minnesota, be prepared for almost 12 months of winter. Pack your clothing accordingly.

You do not need to carry things that you can buy from the US at a low price. Remember, extra luggage may only add to your inconvenience and possibly an additional cost. So just take your essentials and the clothes you feel most comfortable in. However, since you are going with a soccer scholarship to America, do carry your sports gear – the T-shirts, jerseys, shoes and socks you prefer to use. You can always buy more in the US but you need to have that kit to stay ready for a game soon after starting your college life.

Electronics are parts of daily life now. You will need your mobile phone, tablet, charger, laptop with charger, headphones, and USB drive. If you like to relax with some music, carry a small Bluetooth speaker that does not take much space in your suitcase and eliminates unnecessary wires.

An important thing to carry is your prescription medicines if you use any. Just carry a stock that will last for about 2 weeks and the rest you can buy later.

Lastly, don’t forget to take some family mementos - pictures of your mother, father, siblings, pets, friends, and other loved ones. Having them in your room will help you overcome homesickness and will also render a more a more homely and cozy environment to your room.
