When Is Studying Abroad a Good Idea?
Posted: Aug 01, 2019
You’ve probably heard about student exchange programs and studying abroad, but have you ever sat down to think about whether it is a good idea for you or not?
Studying abroad packs plenty of benefits for students and learning institutions at large. For instance, it offers a student the chance to see the world, learn about other people, appreciate different cultures, hone their language skills, open up their career opportunities, and even find new interests. However, when opting to study abroad, one needs to be organized to graduate on time – meaning they may need to take online classes to make it happen. It is also essential to bear in mind that there may be a chance of developing a post-study abroad depression and reverse culture shock.
But the great thing is that the benefits of studying overseas far outweigh the downsides, and that’s what makes it an incredible option to consider. If you are considering taking your high school abroad, then here are some reasons why you should seize the opportunity as soon as it knocks on your door.
If you’d love to see the world
One of the many reasons why people travel around the world is to have a feeling of what happens on the other side. It wouldn’t be too bad to want to experience that yourself. So, if you have been yearning about seeing the world, then studying abroad may be an excellent opportunity to do that intimately. Imagine spending months in another country!
If you want to know more about other cultures
Countries have different cultures – you’ll be surprised by how different people interpret body language For instance, in Greece, tilting the head left to right means "Yes" and tilting it up and down means "No." in Albania and Bulgaria, nodding means "No," while head shake means "Yes." So, if you are curious about how people from different parts of the globe behave, their food, lifestyle among other things, then taking gap year programs abroad may be just what you need to quench your thirst.
If you want to learn, of course
Education is the main reason you’d want to study abroad. So, if you believe that you will learn a lot more (or if the education level in the country you are planning to visit is better), then studying abroad might be a great idea.
If you want to learn a different language
Another incredible reason to study abroad is that you’ll get to interact with the locals intimately and learn as much as you can during the process. It is easier to learn a language when you live with the natives than online or any other way. Studying abroad also involves meeting other people and establishing contacts – some of these contacts will help in your career ladder, others will be lifelong friends. And if this is something that interests, then an exchange program is what you need.
If you love to try your limits
By studying abroad, you have the chance to see how much you like it, and determine whether a more global future appeals to your professional and personal goals. If it does, then you can venture out more, but if it doesn’t, it’s totally fine. You can just stay in your country.
