9 Skills Required to be a Software Engineer
Posted: Aug 19, 2019
What is a Software Engineer?
Software Engineers are professionals that develop software using the engineer principles, programming languages and by following various methodologies. They are also called Software Developer. Software Engineers helps to create software according to user requirement by adding the demanded functionalities. Software Engineering is not easy; it has complex concepts that are used in the development process. A person must have knowledge about programming languages, methodology, practical skills, etc. There are two types of software: System Software and Application Software. Similarly, there are two types of software developers.
Types of Software Developer
System Software Developer – In System Software Development, operating systems are designed and developed. It is also said to be associated with back-end engineering. Creating an operating system is very complex as it includes different methods for time management, job management, IO management, etc. They also have to support other application software so that they can run on the operating system. In the application software, the major focus is on the user needs whereas in system software attention is paid to system needs. Linux, Unix, Windows, iOS, Android, etc. are examples of System Software. In order to keep up with ever-changing technology, the developers need to send software updates regularly. In updates, new features are added and bugs/ errors are resolved.
Application Developer – Application Developer helps to create application software. Application software are developed for a specific purpose. MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Chrome, Fire Fox, etc. are some of the examples of application software. These applications are can be classified into two categories – Desktop Application and Mobile Application. Desktop application are software that run on computer or laptops like MS word or Excel. Mobile Applications are software that run on mobiles like WhatsApp, Instagram, Google, etc. Currently, Agile technology is used for software development.
Qualification Required to be Software Engineer
Graduation – in Computer Science, Mathematics, or equivalent fields. Post-Graduation (Optional) – in Computer Science, Computer Application, or equivalent.Internship or Certification in Software Development
Skills Required to be Software Engineer
Programming Languages – Programming Languages are the heart of any software. Programming languages help the developer to create the idea into reality. Various programming languages are available; the software engineer must be well versed with these languages. For the beginners, they must a thorough knowledge about C, C++, Java, etc. languages. Other than these languages the person must also be aware of Python, PHP and other similar new languages. Even if you know any one language thoroughly, then you can easily learn other languages as only difference is of syntax but the logic remains the same. Hence, if you wish to go for software engineering, make sure you know programming languages.
OOPs Concept – OOPs also known as Object Oriented Programming, is a concept that used in current scenario. Many languages support OOPs concepts like C++, Java, Python, etc. OOPs concepts include – Classes, Objects, Inheritance, Polymorphism, Abstraction, Encapsulation, Message passing, etc. Object-oriented concepts are used so that the real world entities can be used and studies. Real world entities like pen, table, student, etc. are objects, they have a state, identification and behavior. For instance, a pen is an object – name of the pen is its identity, behavior – use to write, state – color of the pen (data or value).
Problem Solving Skills – It is one of the ‘must have’ skill required to a software developer. You must have the ability to think differently. In order to do a work, there are number of options available. You must be able to think about different ways through the problem can be solved. It is also called ‘thinking out of box’. A programmer should be critical thinker. In order to boost this skill, you can or should solve a problem regularly. Carefully read the problem, once you understand it, develop a solution to solve it. Once, you have the solution, try to code it and make a program. Initially, it will be difficult but after practice you will definitely improve.
Logic Building Skills – Logic building skills are also another significant and necessary skill. Again, just like problem solving, logic building is not easy. To build your logic skills, you must play puzzles, brain games, meditate and exercise. It will help you to calm and concentrate thereby sharpening your logic building skills. Also, if a student wishes to improve this skill, they should also practice one program daily. They must also check other programs to solve the same problem. Doing so, will allow your brain to think of other ways to solve a problem.
Knowledge of SDLC – SDLC is Software Development Life Cycle and it is used in building software. There are different phases followed while developing a software. If a person is interested to be a software developer, they must be well aware of these phases. Different stages in software development life cycle are:Software Requirement Specification – All information and functionalities are gathered.
Feasibility Study – It is studied, whether it is possible to develop the software with the existing technology, budget and will it be used by people.Software Designing – Physical and logical software design are designed.Coding/ Implementation – The design is converted to code and the actual implementation is done.
Software Testing – There are different types of software testing in which a software is tested for its checking the functionality and outputs.Maintenance – Maintenance is of two types corrective and preventive. More efforts are used in maintaining the software rather than developing it.
Patience – It is no joke that a lot of time and efforts are used in software development. Most of the time, the technique we are using to solve a problem does not work out. In such cases, the programmer needs to be patient and calm. If one strategy does not work, then the different solution must be thought from scratch.
Communication Skills – Communication skills are essential regardless of the field or job. The engineer must have reading and writing skills. Software engineer have to note details, present reports, etc. due to which they must have these skills. Along with communication skills, interpersonal skills are also necessary.
