How to Have a Unique Hen Night ‘On the Cheap’
Posted: Jul 09, 2014
Organising a unique hen night is often much simpler and more affordable than it appears. While this type of celebratory event is often affected by the ‘romantic comedy effect’ through which the media have managed to convince us that it should be a grandiose, wild, dazzling event, the truth is many brides still opt for understated, quiet hen parties which emphasise the most important aspect: social time with your closest friends and family members.
Similarly, a unique hen night need not cost absurd amounts of money; there is the wedding for that. In fact, girls planning or going to a hen ‘do’ will probably already be planning the wedding, and therefore well aware of the type of costs it usually entails. Therefore, a week-long romp in Milan, appealing though it may sound, will probably be seen as too expensive for their budget, or less thoroughly enjoyed because of the bride-to-be’s awareness of how much her friends are spending. Oftentimes, it is recommended to have a slightly less gaudy hen party, thereby saving money and deriving more enjoyment from it. Below are just a few ideas for a unique hen night for hens on a budget or for those who want something a little different from the norm.
House Parties
There is no rule saying a hen party must be celebrated with a wild drinking binge in town or in some foreign country; in fact, there is nothing to state guests at this type of party need even to imbibe alcohol at all. With an empty house and a little creativity, hens and brides alike can come up with thoroughly enjoyable ways to mark a bride’s ‘last night of freedom’ without breaking the bank.
Unrestrained by budgets or time constraints, hens can take the time to come up with all sorts of imaginative, fun ideas for their unique hen night. Sleepovers, formal tea parties, beauty nights, binge-watching of Sex and the City or Friends boxed sets or even something a little less stereotypically girly, like a gaming tournament, are all perfectly valid ways in which to enjoy some special girl-time with the bride-to-be.
Activity Days
More active brides may also enjoy the chance to spend their hen nights engaged in something actually productive. Whether it be sports, a scavenger hunt, a fancy-dress party, dressmaking or a simple rummage session in a vintage clothing shop, there are a number of easy-to-plan activities which can keep a bride happy on her special night without requiring over-the-odds expenditure. If the bride has slightly more offbeat tastes, her friends can play to those, as well. For example, a girl gamer or fantasy lover will certainly appreciate a hen party held during a convention.
In the end, then, hen parties do not need to be expensive affairs held in Ibiza or Prague. With a little imagination and the right attitude, hens can throw their friends unforgettable ‘dos right in their own home.
