How to Create the Perfect Home Gym

Posted: Aug 23, 2019
If you love working out but don’t want to make a daily trip to a commercial fitness centre, there is a solution for keeping fit without spending big on a gym membership – it’s easier than you think to turn your home into a workout studio. You may not have top of the line equipment or floor-length mirrors, but you can get in a good workout in your home gym, providing that you have the right fitness equipment on hand.
1. Adjustable Dumbbells
Having a mile-long rack of dumbbells is great for your local fitness centre, but you don’t have the space to store them at your home gym. Instead, you’ll be able to tone and strengthen your muscles using adjustable dumbbells – simply add on or remove weights as desired. These dumbbells generally come with a handy carry case that can be easily stored.
2. Resistance Bands
These are the ultimate fitness equipment for home workouts, as they’re small and portable whilst being highly effective. If you aren’t a fan of the longer versions, you could also invest in some mini bands, which provide three levels of resistance for mobility exercises, stretches and more. They’re also incredibly easy to store, and can be great for adding a new level of difficulty to your exercises when you’ve reached your maximum available weights.
3. Yoga Mat
If you’ve given up on working out at home because you’re sick of sliding around on your hardwood floors or getting carpet burn, a yoga mat could be just the solution you’ve been looking for. They will provide you with stability and some extra cushion whilst doing push-ups, planks and other floor stretches – you can also use them for yoga!
4. Kettlebells
These are a fantastic way to get in a quick total body workout, as they can be used to perform a variety of exercises. Whether you’re performing upper or lower body workouts, or even a full body cardio burn, a set of kettlebells can be a great addition to your home gym.
5. Medicine Ball
Don’t risk breaking your television or a window by throwing around a traditional medicine ball. Instead, invest in a soft one – it will still provide the weight that you require, but are made from a soft leather so it’s less likely to cause damage. You can even gently throw them against the wall or tap them on the floor with ease.
6. Skipping Rope
This is a fairly common piece of home gymfitness equipment, particularly if you want to get the heart pumping but don’t want to fork out thousands for cardio machines. Just make sure that you’ve cleared the area of breakable items! A weighted rope is perfect for adding some resistance or you can step up the intensity with high knees.
7. Foam Roller
We understand that it’s sometimes hard to get motivated for a high-intensity workout at your home gym. Why not take a day to recover and prepare your muscles for your next intense workout? A rigid foam roller has three different pressure zones to help ease muscle soreness and increase flexibility in your hamstrings and so on.
If you’re hoping to turn your spare room into a home gym, either to save money on a gym membership or so that you don’t have to take a daily pilgrimage to your local fitness centre, we hope that this article has shown you what fitness equipment you should invest in. Although there is plenty of equipment to choose from, you can definitely make-do with those outlined above.
