It was in 1755 that the first recorded patent for a sewing machine was granted out in Britain to an engineer of German origin and since then there have been numerous improvements on the basic model for sewing machines to have reached the stage at which they are currently poised. For women, these machines were nothing short of a wonder wherein stitching needs of the entire family could be achieved within a fraction of the time it would have taken by hand. Because these were in vogue in that era, conducting sewing machine repairs did not require even a second thought since qualified repairmen were readily available.

Sewing machines served as the home-maker’s weapon to fight against rising prices when the two World Wars shook the Earth and the Great Depression rendered even the most basic necessities out of reach. This trend continued till the 1960s’ but declined thereafter when large-scale mechanization made it possible to produce high quality apparel at cheap rates. Owing to this trend, the charm of home-made clothes evaporated and in many houses the sewing machine was simply tucked away into the attic. Demands for sewing machine repairs in this era were few and far between and there was an exodus of technicians to other forms of trade.

Towards the end of the twentieth century, there was a renewed interest in sewing machines and this time it was not the economy but the desire to sport personalized clothing that spurred its return. Courtesy of the interest shown by young women during this last decade, sewing regained its lost status as a veritable hobby and many of the machines that had been antiquated were reinstated in homes. However, there was lack of know-how in case of sewing machine repairs because apart from a member of the older generation, no-one from the present generation was qualified enough to conduct repairs.

Then came an era when sewing machines evolved into contemporary appliances and were laced with all the latest technologies like computers, touch screens and customization options. Rather than alleviating the problem, this further aggravated the situation where sewing machine repairs were concerned due to lack of trained personnel. Owing to growing demand, the niche soon emerged from its days of old and specialization in repair of sewing machine became a popular vocation. Today, there are as many repair service centers as different types of machines and all that the user has to do is pick and choose carefully from the available options.

Considering that you are a contemporary user of sewing machines and are facing the problem of machine breakdown wherein repair is inevitable, knowledge of certain edicts is a must before taking the plunge. Foremost concern in this regard is that of expenditure as in the amount that you are willing to spare for getting your sewing machine repaired. That said if it is a huge amount then wouldn’t it be wiser to replace the machine rather than go for repairs? Second point on the agenda is to find a local shop that specializes in sewing machine repairs so that it is easier for you to keep track of the task and receive regular updates.

Learning how to operate different types of sewing machines is something that is bound to work in your favor over a period of time. To enjoy working on your machine without facing a hitch, it is imperative to be aware of simple sewing machine repairs that can be carried out at home in form of preventive steps.
