What Is Astrology?
Posted: Sep 09, 2019
The etymology of astrology is discovered within the Greek ' astrologia, ' and is the combination of two Greek phrases-Astron, meaning star; and logos, meaning study. Astrology means that the stars are learning. Astrology has been known to the peoples of the ancient world for over 5,000 years, and had been used to study how the celestial bodies affect the events, and therefore the lives of people, on Earth. Tradition has it that before 2000 B.C. astrology originated in ancient Babylon and ancient Mesopotamia. From here, the system of learning the sun, moon, stars, and therefore the planets, and their effect on Earth reached Greece around 2400 years ago, four hundred years before the birth of Christ. Then the science spread to Egypt, the Middle East, and India through the conquests of Alexander.
According to a different school of thought, astrology was already prevailing in India, and this kind of astrology – referred to as Vedic astrology – dates back to 6000 years.
Different Astrological Traditions
There are many various traditions of astrology, some similar, and some based on different principles. Of the numerous different traditions, some are Chinese astrology; Jyotish or Indian (Vedic) astrology; Babylonian astrology; kabalistic astrology; Tibetan astrology; Mayan astrology; Celtic astrology; and therefore the modern Western astrology.
These traditions are, in no way, exhaustive. Of these, the 3 major traditions used by trendy astrologers are:
- The Chinese astrology
- Jyotish or Indian (Vedic) astrology, and
- The modern Western astrology
Vedic astrology and the modern Western astrology follow the horoscopic system, wherever there's a casting of a horoscope. A horoscope is an astrological chart. According to these 2 traditions, the horoscope represents the Sun, the Moon, the Stars, and therefore the planets and these celestial entities influence our lives in every side.
The Indian (Vedic) astrology is Sidereal - where the zodiac is aligned with twenty-seven constellations or star groups. The modern Western astrology, on the other hand, is tropical – dividing the sky into twelve components – all equal. The Chinese system of astrology developed on entirely different principles and similar traditions existed within the countries under the Chinese influence, like the other countries of East Asia, as well as Japan, Vietnam, and Thailand.
How It Works
Astrology believes that our lives are influenced, our personalities are formed, and the future course that our lives can take depends on how the celestial bodies, like the sun, the moon, the stars, and the planets, are placed after we are born.
We are quite used to the kind of astrological readings we see in our newspapers each morning. This is the sun sign astrology and is astrology in its simplest kind. Only the date of your birth is needed, and you get very limited results through this method. Serious practitioners of astrology don't use this method.
If you would like your readings to be more accurate, the astrologer would need the exact time of your birth, to calculate where in the Zodiac every planet was at that time. He also has to know in which signs of the constellation are the planets positioned. Drawing a precise horoscope is a complex procedure.
