General Tips For Choosing Fresh Fruits And Vegetable

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables should be preferred over frozen or dried varieties as they are more nutritious.
  • Choose fruit and vegetables of different colors. Different colors not only indicated different types and amount of nutrients but also emphasize on the source of nutrient. For Example: fruit and vegetables yellow and orange in color are good sources of beta-carotene, while green leafy vegetables and fruits are rich in Vitamin A and Iron.
  • When buying Vegetables and Fruits, ensure that they are in season i.e. they are easily available at that time of the year. Off-Season vegetable and fruits are not fresh and usually kept in cold storage.
  • When selecting fruits and vegetables, select from the open section rather than those packed in boxes or bag.

  • Beans: When buying Beans, snap them from the middle. Those with small beans inside are best. Avoid looking at strands that are dry.
  • Broccoli, Brussels, and Cauliflower: They should be tight and close together. They should be compact. Smudges or dirty spot may indicate insect contamination.
  • Cabbage, Lettuce: Avoid heads heavy and those with worm holes, discoloration or rot.
  • Cucumber: Choose long slender cucumber, which is dark or medium green. Avoid those with yellow spots or missed brown spots.
  • Sweet Potatoes: When choosing a sweet potato, look for one with bronze or rose skin. Rose skin Sweet Potatoes are soft and sweet to cook, while yellow or light fold are firm and less moist.
  • Berries: Ensure that berries are plump and have even color. Berries such blackberries and raspberries with cap may be unripe.
  • Citrus Fruit: When choosing citrus fruit, look for those that are heavy in size. Smoother, thin-skinned indicate more juice and ripeness. Avoid citrus fruits that have a sunken appearance or have dark spots.
