Tignes, close to the famous resort of Val D’Isere in the Espace Killy, is one of the highest resorts in Europe. Consequently, it offers some of the best skiing available - both on and off piste in the deep powder snow. The village itself sits high above the tree line and is surrounded by a huge range of runs. Well-known for its famous long runs, the Grand Motte glacier is a highlight of this area and is open almost all year round.

The snow conditions here are very reliable and because the village stands at over 2100m, the skiing is predictably fantastic. For those in search of great conventional skiing but with the opportunity to also go off the beaten track in search of deep powder, snow conditions in this resort are perfect.

In Search of the Snow

The runs in the resort of Tignes are remarkably good, and the challenging, relentless, yet beautiful off-piste skiing draws people from all over the world. Many off-piste opportunities are just on the doorstep and are served by the lift system, which minimizes the need to hike for miles in search of that elusive deep powder.

Snow sports can be dangerous, however, so if you plan to go off-piste you must make sure that you have the appropriate equipment. It is always best to hire an experienced guide if you are heading out to the unpatrolled areas of the mountain. The guides have the knowledge, not only of the area, but also of the snow conditions, the patterns of the weather, and the best places to go. They will also be able to make the call as to whether conditions are safe on that particular day. These guides are worth their weight in gold and can make the difference between a thoroughly enjoyable day and one spent getting lost and even putting yourself in danger.

If you're travelling with the family, they may not want the adrenalin-fuelled experience you do, but rest assured that Tignes caters for them as well. There are some excellent beginner runs and a variety of slopes suitable for all abilities. The reputable ski schools will help children and beginners get their snow legs and also assist intermediates to move to the next level.

The resort has some excellent catered chalets and a buzzing centre boasting some good restaurants and bars for evening entertainment. It has to be said, though, that this resort tends to attract the more serious skier, mainly because of its excellent off-piste conditions and great deep powder snow, so nightlife is somewhat quieter than in the neighboring resort of Val D’Isere. Indeed many keen skiers actually relish this fact.

Danielle Hodges is the Marketing Manager for Ski Amis, a specialist ski travel agency and booking service offering bonded holidays in resorts with deep powder snow and accommodation in catered or self-catered chalets in La Tania and other fantastic destinations. For a luxury or good-value skiing holiday and the best catered chalets call Ski Amis.
