We all know that Diabetes has become a big issue these days. More and more people suffer from it, and this is closely related to bad lifestyle choices, unhealthy diet, and too little exercise. But what is diabetes actually? Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas is no longer able to make insulin or when the body cannot make good use of the insulin it produces. There are two types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. While type 1 can develop at any age but occurs most commonly in children and youngsters, type 2 is closely related to and caused by eating too oily, processed fast foods, and sugar-rich foods.

Generally, people who suffer from type 1 require insulin injections or pump to ensure that the sugar level drops. Type 2 diabetics can control their blood sugar by diet or pills only. No matter which type of diabetes your friend, relative, or student has: Yoga has been scientifically proven to naturally manage blood sugar levels, diabetic’s health, and mental well-being. While specific asana encourages good blood circulation to all organs, they also have a positive effect on the brain, eye sight, and digestive system.

Below we have mentioned the three most significant parts of yoga to manage diabetes. Always ensure that the diabetic measures his/her blood sugar level before joining a class. It’s essential to have a blood sugar level of at least 150-180 before starting. There should be some orange juice or bananas within reaching distance in case of a quick low.

YOGA ASANA

Dhanurasana, Vrkshasana, Mandukasana, Paschimottanasana, Natarajasana, and Surya Namaskar are the balancing and most effective asanas when working with a diabetic. While Surya Namaskar progresses the overall energy level and fitness, Natarajasana and Vrkshasana implement a sense of physical balance, which is often missing. Mandukasana, Dhanurasana, and Paschimottanasana put slight pressure on the pancreas and improve the blood flow to the pancreas and digestive system.

PRANAYAMA

Anulom Velom or Nadi Shodan, along with Brahmari Pranayam, are very helpful pranayama methods when it comes to diabetes as they provide mental relaxation and rebuilding of tissues and cells. Kapalabhati should be avoided totally for novices.

YOGIC DIET

According to Yoga, a vegetarian diet rich in grains, dairy products, fresh fruits, and slightly cooked vegetables nourishes the mind and body and removes toxins. Ayurveda recommends eating chickpeas as they naturally control blood sugar levels. There is a special ayurvedic herbal medicine called Ashwanganda, which is also used for diabetics, and it is useful in case of stress and nervosity. We all know that Diabetes has become a big issue these days.
