Looking for somewhere relaxing, warm and picturesque for your next holiday? Why not consider the Italian island of Sardinia? Holidays on this island are truly unforgettable, and whether you are simply into sunbathing on gorgeous beaches, or prefer to be out hiking discovering the relics of an ancient history, there is something for everyone here.

There is a legend on the island that tells of its origin. It is said that when God finished the creation of the rest of the world he had a few rocks left over at the end, which he decided to drop into the Mediterranean. He then looked at all the best parts of everything else he had created and took a little of each to scatter over this new island – this became Sardinia. Holidays spent here, amongst the stunning beauty of the island do offer a hint of something divine no matter whether you believe the story or not.

An Introduction

This lovely island is almost always blessed with good weather and has more hours of sunshine than any other part of mainland Italy. It is known as ‘The Island of Winds’, and these refreshing breezes are gratefully received in the summer, reducing humidity and making it feel much more pleasant in Sardinia.

Holidays here are becoming more common these days, but is interesting to note that the island remained untouched by tourism until the 1960s; even now there is only one significant area that houses so called tourist resorts. The rest of the island very much retains its traditional charm and clings steadfastly to its past. Being an island, it has been home to many a civilization throughout the ages, including the Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Byzantines, Tuscans, Spaniards and Austrian Hungarians; all have left evidence of their presence in some form on the island, particularly in the coastal areas.

This stunning island is certainly diverse and around every corner there is contrast and variety. In Sardinia, holidays can be spent soaking up the sun on the magnificent beaches, bordered with fine white sand and crystal clear waters, or spent discovering the rich culture and heritage that is on display throughout the landscape. The interior is rugged and dotted with historic remains as well as vineyards, sheep, and farms growing fruits and vegetables. The produce here is revered and everything produced on the island is organic.

The local wine is rightly world famous, but because the production of many vintages is so small, they run out after only a few months. This only adds to its desirability and many people respect the fact that many of the island's wines are not exported but remain to be enjoyed locally.

The people are very proud of their homeland and the government has laws in place to prevent a chaotic influx of tourist development. New buildings have to meet with strict controls in order that the beauty and tranquility is preserved.
