High-pressure water drain cleaning, and why plumbers are using it:

High-pressure water drain cleaning has become the prefered method for modern plumbers to clean a drain. More and more plumbers are changing over from the old standard electric cable machines to a "hydro Jetter". A tool that pumps jets of high-pressure water through drain blockages, sometimes, clearing a blockage in a matter of seconds. With the expertise and experience of the right plumber, hydro jetting is the most thorough, cost-effective and environmentally friendly method of drain cleaning today.

A high-pressure water hydro jetter or "Jetter" is an internal combustion engine that drives a high-pressure water pump up-to a pressure of around 5000 psi. The "jetter", usually mounted on the back of a truck or trailer, has a water feed connected, and a hose to transfer the pressurised water from the machine back to the location of the blocked drain. Another hose called a "mini reel", with an on-off control lever is attached to the transfer hose. A specific nozzle designed for the task at hand is selected and attached to the "mini reel". The hose is now ready to be inserted into the drain opening.

When a plumber begins to "jet" a blockage, he will access the drain through an opening or access point. Typical access points are usually inspection openings or "cleanouts" a screw cap fitting into the pipe, or overflow gully traps, generally outside of the house in the yard.

The "mini reel" hose goes into the drain with the required nozzle attached. The nozzle selected will perform a specific action.

The "Penetrator", a nozzle designed to cut a small hole through a blockage; pierces the obstruction with a jet of water from the front and several rear thrusting jets of water from behind.

The "Roto-Spin" or "Warthog", a nozzle with an offset forward-facing jet at the head, the water pressure rotates the head, assisting in cutting through obstructions and blockages. When the roto-spinner is into the blockage deep enough, the rear-facing jets that aid in turning the nozzle cut away roots to the edge of the pipe.

The "Root Ranger", a nozzle with a reverse jet of water from a turbine, possibly one the best root cutting nozzles available today: thoroughly cleaning roots, grease and debris from a drain.

The selected nozzle will be pushed along the pipe by the rear-facing jets of water. When at the blockage the high-pressure jets of water will begin to cut through the obstruction. Depending on the severity of the blockage, thicker more massive clogs will take longer; it may only be a matter of seconds before the overflowing drain has begun to flow freely again.

High-pressure water jetting is the most efficient drain cleaning method today. It can penetrate deep into built-up obstructions, flush out roots, silt and any other foreign matter that clog up drain pipes. A high-pressure water jetter not only clears the blockage in a matter of seconds but also pushes the remaining debris out of the property and into the main sewer line; ensuring the removal of any obstruction.
