So, you are thinking of buying a used truck because you are lacking enough money. Whatever the reason for buying be, the truck is going to be an asset for you. But if you fail to buy wisely, then this asset is going to ruin your money and effort. Moreover, as your purpose not going to be fulfilled, this giant machine is going to take some extra space in your garage and create a lag in your production or work. So, it is better to check before you make a final decision of buying.

What things Should You Check?

I could mention a ton of issues and things you should take care before buying any used truck. But I am not going in details. I assume you are not known to any technical things and therefore giving you an overall idea in brief of the things you should check.

Check Service Records

A service record is important for each vehicle. Before buying the truck check whether it had a bad accident, any big repair etc. This will help you to understand the basic condition of the truck or of any vehicle. For example, if the truck had issues with brakes, you should think of it again.

Check the Engine

The engine is the most important part of a truck. Because it’s the part, that helps the truck to drag/carry things. For technical understanding, you should have a technician with you, who will judge the quality of the engine at the time of purchase. But as a non-techie, you can check whether it is making any extra sound, producing black gas, has any leak etc.

Check the Axle Quality

Axle carries all load of a truck. Before purchasing you should check the axle. Check whether it is buckled? Check the springs, whether is there any distortion in its shape or too much used. A proper and non-buckled the axle is much necessary if you want to get good performance from the truck.

Check the Tires

Tires are often expensive, and you should pay much attention to it. As tires get easily wear out, you should check its current condition. The tire can speak about the condition of the vehicle, where it has been used, for how long and how much would you be able to go with it.

Other Issues

Check the following things before making a final decision of purchasing:

  • Suspension should work fine. Is it working seamlessly?
  • There should not have any big damage to the body of the truck. You can ignore the small damages and distortions.
  • Front glass, looking glass, lights should not be broken and should be functional.
  • Check the bottom of the truck. There you should not see any oil leakage, any wires hanging etc.
  • Check the oil tank, oil leakage etc.
  • Check the odometer. Do not always believe the odometer numbers as it can be tampered. Check odometer and tire conditions at a single time and take the decision.
