Heading to Tenerife? It's a hugely popular tourist destination with plenty of attractions. If you've never visited before, these FAQs and answers on Tenerife transfers and other things may be of great help.

Are Tenerife transfers easy to get from the airport to accommodation?

Yes. If you’re visiting on a package tour, Tenerife transfers may already have been arranged on your behalf. If not, you can make your own arrangements with one of the excellent shuttle companies operating there. For your peace of mind, it’s probably best done in advance online. Remember that public transport may be limited and unpredictable, plus it may not go to exactly where you’re staying.

Is this a party island?

No. Some resorts are quiet and laid-back and others are much more developed. It’s probably fair to say that at the height of the season the larger, more popular ones will be busy and ‘lively’ at night. That said, you’re bound to find a resort to suit your individual tastes.

Is the weather always good?

Pretty much, yes. The Canary Islands sit just off the west coast of Africa, and their big attraction for European holidaymakers is that they get beautiful warm weather more or less all year round. It’s probably about the closest place you can go to in winter in order to be guaranteed some sun and warmth. Of course there can be some seasonal variations, but you can find out the details of those on specialist websites.

Are The Canaries part of Spain?

They are a Spanish possession but have special status. They’re technically not part of the European Union - just as is the case with, say, The Channel Islands. This is largely of no importance to holidaymakers, but it does make some difference in terms of your duty free allowances. You’ll be made clear on that usually on your inbound flight. Spanish is the major language, though English is also widely understood in most larger resorts.

Can you get to the other Canary Islands from here?

Yes, there are flights and ferries plus some organised trips to islands such as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Your travel agents or hotel will provide details.

What are ‘black sand beaches’?

Tenerife was formed by volcanic action and that means that several of its beaches have black sand rather than the golden variety that usually springs to mind. There are some golden sand beaches here but they’re largely man-made. Black sand is really no problem though. It’s larger-grained, but that can have some advantages because it’s easier to brush off clothes and skin, plus it doesn’t blow about so much if there’s a breeze. In passing, it’s a myth that black sand stains clothing! There might be something to that in the UK where black sand sometimes means oil pollution but that’s not the case here at all.

Can I get from the airport to anywhere on the island?

Yes but it does depend upon your chosen method of travel. If you’re travelling under your own steam, don’t assume public transport or ordinary airport shuttles will get you door-to-door. Some resorts or inland hideaways might be well of the beaten track. If you’re heading somewhere small, prebook one of the private Tenerife transfers from the airport.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct. If you’re looking for Tenerife transfers from the airport, Shuttle Direct provide pre-booked shuttles to major destinations all over Europe. Wherever you travel, Shuttle Direct can make sure that you don’t miss your car on your holiday abroad.
