What if the paper jams in the multi-function printer?
Posted: Nov 21, 2019
The paper has jammed in the printer. He just didn't want us with all the things you have to do today. Turn around the multi-function with your hands in your hair, thinking of that urgent document you need immediately printed in 3-4 copies. Your work must stop.
How long? Can you solve it yourself or do you need to call for assistance? If at least once you found yourself in a situation similar to this, read this post, it is right up your alley.
When does the paper jam: roll up your sleeves or call for assistance?
When the equipment gives jamming problems, it can be determined by both the factors linked to the need to do maintenance by a technician, and an error in the use of the user, which once understood can be avoided.
If a cleaning is required, a change of the rubber pads for the paper grip, or even the duplex unit has worn out after the equipment has already produced thousands of pages, there is nothing to do. You have to call a technician.
If on the contrary you have not encountered problems of this type, then it could be an error due to the weight (= paper weight) too low or too high of the paper: each device, according to its characteristics, has a tolerance range with respect to the weight of the card you can manage.
How to tell if the paper weight is correct for your multifunction?
You can find this information easily on the brochures of all the equipment supplied by the manufacturers or distributors. The "weight" of the paper declared on the reams is meant by the square meter: generally the paper used in the multifunction for the normal printing of documents is 80g / m 2.
Can the preservation of the card affect the fact that it jams more or less easily?
Absolutely yes. It is important that the paper is kept in a dry place and that it is of good quality. Poor quality or recycled paper (where not otherwise indicated by a test on print performance on 30% or 100% recycled paper) generally releases much more dust in the passage, thus increasing the possibility of jamming over time.
How to recognize where the jam is?
The new generation of equipment indicates, generally on the display, the point or points where the paper has jammed. A few manoeuvres are usually enough to remove the sheets. Let's see them together.
Some guidelines for resolving the jam on a multi-function
- Look at the display: As we said: look at the display; the display shows the point or points in the paper path where the jammed sheet is located.
- If the jam is in the first part of the paper path and that is when it comes out of the drawer
It is necessary to check the drawer: if the paper is at the bottom of the drawer it may be necessary to pull it out completely and open the lower side door on the right side of the multifunction (see photo).
- If the jam is on the front and back:The useful door to be opened is positioned laterally under the by-pass tray. Here the paper should be visible and then it should be carefully extracted trying to remove it completely without tearing it (see photo).
- Other jams: Other jams require access to the machine through the opening of the vertical by-pass tray (photo). Once the green buttons are open they indicate the points where you can act to see the sheet or to make the sheet slide.
In conclusion: the fundamental rules always valid
It is essential to remove the paper without breaking it because even a small piece of broken paper inside the machine can cause further jamming. To remove the paper, do not use other tools outside the hands, such as sharp objects, or other; remember also that opening the front door is never useful to solve a jam but it is only used to replace the toner cartridges or the waste toner box. If your problem of printer is not going to fix the you should contact printer repair technician.
