The last few decades have truly been an exciting time to be alive. Human technology has advanced at an explosive rate in these years with almost every other person now carrying a supercomputer in their very mobile phones. And touchscreen technology has played a vital role in this advancement.

As you might have already guessed, touchscreen monitors work with a pressure sensitive panel that covers the actual screen of the device. The requirement of peripheral devices has been pretty much done away with.
Touch panels generally come in three varieties – a classification that depends upon the method they use to pick up human touch interface. These types are resistive, capacitive and surface acoustic wave.
- The resistive type works with having two touch panels with a thin space between them. Then the user touches the screen at a certain point, the two panels meet as a result of the pressure, sending teh exact coordinates of that point to the computing system.
- The Capacitive touchscreen type usually runs a small electrical charge through the screen. When you touch the screen with your finger, some of the charge gets distributed to it, marking the coordinates of the location for the computer to comprehend. You can expect the images and display to be much clearer with this type of touch interface as it emits more light and does not require two distinct panels for computing.
- Lastly, there is the surface acoustic wave system that uses transducers to send electrical waves across the screen. When a user touches this screen, the computing device can determine the location depending upon how the electrical signal is received from one transducer to the next. This type of touch panel is considered to be the best as it emits the most clear pictures and offers the most accurate touch recognition.
When you compare the utility of all three technologies, you will find that capacitive touchscreens can register the touch of only living objects. The other two types, however can recognise pressure from almost any type of touch. This fact generates its own set of advantages and disadvantages for each type. All in all they truly are an amazing piece of technology.
