Tattoos are becoming more and more common with the passing time, and just as popular is the trending cosmetic surgery. Both are widely considered investments to your body that cost quite a bit of money depending on the severity of what you want to have done. Naturally, these two aesthetic procedures will eventually cross paths, in the case of a tatted individual wanting a specific surgery done. With body tattoos being so widespread, how will this affect, say, a body procedure?

As we age our body changes. We get wrinkles and sunspots, as well as saggier skin. You may find that you have saggy skin in the stomach area that could have been caused by weight loss, pregnancy, or just getting older. A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure to tighten both the skin and abdominal muscles, and possibly remove some excess fat deposits, of your stomach and abdominal area. If you have tattoos in the pelvic, hip, lower stomach, or belly button region what does this mean for getting a tummy tuck?

What to expect from a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty in medical terms) is a procedure in which the skin and muscles from your abdominal area are tightened and excess skin and fat are removed. This can help change the appearance of your shape and size. abdominoplasty can be used to create a flatter stomach area, as well as a more narrow waistline.

You will be placed under general anesthesia while our board-certified doctors operate. This operation can last anywhere from 2 to 5 hours. During the procedure, the doctor will create a U-shaped incision along your pelvic area and the skin is loosened from the abdominal wall. During this time the doctor will tighten the abdominal muscles with sutures. Once this is completed, the doctor will create a second incision around the belly button to reconstruct this area. After pulling the skin down and trimming the excess skin, the doctor will then suture the incision closed. You may have temporary drains placed within the surgical site which will be left in and removed at a follow-up appointment.

You may experience some discomfort as well as swelling, numbness, or bruising. The pain can be managed with medication, and you will be asked to wear a compression garment to help with the swelling. You can often go back to work in roughly 2 to 3 weeks and should abstain from strenuous exercise and activities for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

What changes to your tattoos can happen?

We already know that getting a tummy tuck will remove excess skin from the abdominal area. During the surgical procedure, your abdominal skin is pulled taut and then the excess skin is trimmed away. This can lead to dramatic results in the shape and appearance of your abdominal area!

But what about the tattoos that are on your skin since some skin will be removed during this procedure? If you have a tattoo in the abdominal area, it might seem stretched or distorted after surgery. If you have a tattoo around the pelvic area or belly button, you may even be looking at having part of the tattoo removed during surgery due to these two areas being the areas where the surgical sutures will be done.

How can you minimize damage to your tattoos?

Not all damage to tattoos can be eliminated during a tummy tuck procedure. Again, your tattoos may change appearance during or after the procedure. However, there are steps you can take to minimize the damage to the expensive tattoos you have invested in.

Communication is key when it comes to any cosmetic surgery. During your consultation, speak with your doctor about your concerns. Talk openly about what you are thinking could happen and what you would like to happen.

Depending on where your tattoos are located, your doctor may be able to minimize the amount of damage. They may opt to pull the skin in a different way to minimize the stretching or "pulling" of the skin and of the tattoo itself. They may slightly alter the location of the incision to minimize the damage to your tattoo. You might not be able to escape having some damage to the tattoo, but by having open and honest conversations with your surgeon you may be able to minimize the damage.

What to expect getting a tattoo AFTER Tummy Tuck?

You might be saying, I want to get a tummy tuck done BEFORE getting my tattoo. What then? Or you might be thinking that you would like to get a tattoo to cover the incision site. Scars are much less noticeable now than they were previously. With advancements in medicine and scar care, the scar is much smaller than in previous years. However, some patients would like their scars completely covered.

For individuals wanting to get a tattoo over the incision scar, you must be fully medically cleared by your doctor. In an abdominoplasty, this can take anywhere from six months to a full year. In other words, a good amount of time must pass before it is safe to tattoo over this area.
