All you Need to Know About Student Visa of New Zealand

Students from all over the world immigrate to New Zealand to pursue higher studies. As per the latest report by the immigration department of New Zealand, 46,261 international students were permitted New Zealand Student Visa in the year 2018-2019. It is mandatory to get a student visa for undergoing a study course of more than 3 months. Kinds of Student Visa

There are four different kinds of student visas that you can apply for. These are-

  • Fee Paying Student Visa
  • Exchange Student Visa
  • Foreign Government Supported Student Visa and
  • Pathway Student Visa

All of these have a different requirement, eligibility criteria, binding rules and perks. Let’s go through them separately.

Fee Paying Student Visa

As the name itself describes, an international student applying for a course of more than 3 months should bear full tuition fees. Student can apply for it upon confirmation of admission in an approved educational institution. Work part-time for 20hrs a week while studying collaterally or involve in full-time internships/employment during vacations. Enjoy your rights for up to 4 years!

Exchange Student Visa

You may apply for this visa if you have a place in an approved student exchange scheme. The visa is valid up to 4 years during which you can work part-time or full-time. Applications for visas are accepted throughout the year.

Foreign Government Supported Student Visa

International students permitted foreign government loan or scholarships may apply for this visa. Written evidence that your tuition and living expenses would be paid by foreign government loan or scholarships must be shown. Students can carry out part-time work while studying for up to 20 hrs a week.

Pathway Student Visa

A one-of-its-kind visa, Pathway Student Visa allow students to undertake three consecutive courses given you have an offer from a pathway education provider. Additionally, students need to submit a letter describing the start and end date of the courses opted for.

A full tuition fee for the first academic year or first course should be paid. This particular study abroad student visa allows you to stay for up to 5 years in New Zealand. The perk includes a part-time work opportunity while studying. Students can involve into full-time work during holidays.

What is required for the visa application process?

Given are the documents to be submitted along with the application form.

  • An offer from an approved education provider
  • Proof that you’ve enough funds to sponsor your tuition and living expense
  • Passport-size photos and the passport
  • A copy of your air ticket
  • Visa application fee
  • A medical certificate, chest x-ray and a police certificate might be asked

The visa application procedure takes a maximum of eight weeks for completion.
