What is Babbitt Metal?
Babbitt metal was created by Isaac Babbitt during the 1800s. This white metal alloy has changed over the years, as the original formula of 3.6% copper, 7.1% antimony and 89.3% tin has been replaced a bit. Despite all of the changes, some manufacturers choose to use the original formula.
Even with that formula in place, there are now other white metals that can also be identified as Babbitt metal. These are types of tin or lead, copper, or antimony. These metals are known for their soft and hard composition that makes them ideal for molding into different shapes. They offer low-friction resistance, so they won’t wear down over time. Plus, they are corrosion resistant. Each of these metals can also allow for better lubricant absorption.
Why Are Manufacturers Starting to Use Babbitt as a Metalizing Material?
Babbitt is often used to line bearing shells that are found in engines. These are usually made from cast iron, steel, and bronze. This lining can protect any mechanical parts from degrading due to friction. Babbitt bearing repair is commonly used to fix a high-friction area that various lubricants can’t normally fix.

From there, the liquid is cast into whatever shape is needed while the metal is still molten hot. It will then solidify from there. Machinery is then used to create the specified thickness and clean it of any imperfections. Wire spraying is another option that is used on occasion. These coatings are often very ductile and can work with heavy-duty bearings.
