FAQs: How Often Should I Update My Hydrocarbon Dew Point Calculation Software?

Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis (DHA) is a gas chromatography based technique to determine the composition of individual hydrocarbons and hydrocarbons by group type in spark emission fuels. DHA supports petroleum refining and production clients helping them optimize production, which allows them to meet regulatory requirements as well as enhance profitability. DHA is also used in concert with high temperature simulated distillation to correct the ‘front end’ of the boiling point curve due to carbon disulfide and how it affects the chromatographic separation. In order to do either of these procedures, you need a hydrocarbon dew point software.

If you already have this type of software, you may be wondering whether or not it is time for an upgrade. Nothing lasts forever, especially not software. You know this! What you don’t know is whether it is time for something new.

In the world of software, computers, and electronics, lifespans seem to be getting shorter and shorter. You used to have the same phones for years and now it seems like your new, expensive smartphone is obsolete nearly the minute you walk out of the store. New versions of devices and programs come out so frequently that it’s almost impossible to keep everything completely up-to-date. This includes your hydrocarbon dew point calculation software.

First, let’s make sure it is clear exactly what we are talking about. When discussing updating and purchasing new software, this does not mean the built-in software on your computer itself. Operating system (OS) software such as Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X should always be kept as up-to-date as possible, but you don’t really need to do much in order to keep it this way because these programs do a great job at keeping themselves updated. Your computer will alert you and say there are minor patches and fixes that should be put onto your computer during a restart, without the need for a complete upgrade. Always follow the rule of running an OS version that is no older than two versions prior to the latest.

Your software needed for work calculations is something totally different. It will not tell you when it is out-of-date; it needs you to take control of the situation. Programs like these typically have regular minor updates and then major updates every one or two years. You shouldn’t run a version older than one prior to the latest.

Running extremely outdated software can actually cause major problems, but you're generally not running a significant risk unless you’re using software that is more than a few years old. Aside from missing out on new features that can really save time and enhance your experience in using your programs, a lot of hydrocarbon dew point software programs will have trouble running on a machine with an OS much more advanced than it was designed to be run on. You run the risk of having critical compatibility issues if you’re still using older versions of the hydrocarbon dew point software
