The Archaeological Survey of India has described these paintings and sculptures as ' the finest surviving examples of Indian art, particularly painting.'

2. The Great Sanchi Stupa

The Great Sanchi Stupa, commissioned by emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, is situated in Madhya Pradesh. This ancient stupa is the oldest stone-based structure in India. Its unique hemispherical structure is built over the relics of Lord Gautama Buddha. Life stories of Buddha and Jataka tales are depicted on the gateways or torans of this huge stupa built under Satavahana rulers who had employed ivory workers.

3. University of Nalanda

This Mahavihara is situated in ancient Magadha, today's Bihar. This acclaimed university was a learning center during the 5th-12th century flourishing under the Gupta Empire. It also was under the patronage of emperors like Harsha and later on, under the rulers of the Pala empire.

4. Mcleodganj

Mcleodganj has this beautiful monastery, Dharmshala, in Himachal Pradesh. It is the home to Dalai Lama in India. Due to the large Tibetan population here, Mcleodganj is also known as 'Little Lhasa.' 5. Salihundam

Salihundam is a village based in Srikakulam of the state of Andhra Pradesh. It was a rice emporium popularly known as Salivatika, which consists of several Buddhist stupas. Amidst the beautiful scenic surroundings lie this massive complex for Buddhist tourists and pilgrims. This ancient monastery is built on a hillock, which also enhances its beauty.

6. Hussain Sagar

This one is not amongst the most ancient Buddhist pilgrim sites yet, houses the world's tallest monolithic statue of Lord Buddha. This vast Buddha statute is in Hyderabad, which carries an interesting back story. While being transported to its destination, the icon had fallen into the Hussain Sagar in 1990. It took two years for the statue to be taken out. Later in 2006, the statue was declared sacred after performing certain rituals by Dalai Lama.

7. Thotlakonda Buddhist Complex

This ancient Buddhist complex falls 15 km away from the city of Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. This complex situated on a hilltop is one of the sources which disseminates Buddhism to Sri Lanka and parts of southeast Asia. This beautiful Buddhist pilgrim site was home to over 100 monks during the 2nd century BC and 2nd century AD.

8. Buddhist Golden Temple

The Namdroling Nyingmapa Monastery in Coorg, Karnataka, is one of the most important Buddhist temples and pilgrim sites. A large number of monks are trained from this temple, where a lot of Tibetans have settled.
