Both air blower and vacuum pump work side by side. As in air blower, the entrance of air takes place from the spinning entrance impeller and at the outlet, suction takes place therefore it works as a vacuum pump. Henceforth, the air blower works in the front while the vacuum pump works in the backend. It’s a general theoretical view, though there are many differences between them.

Let’s discuss the major differences between the air compressor and vacuum pump.

  1. Air blower is an air source device where it converts mechanical energy generated by the compact air from the spinning inlet impeller into the gaseous pressure energy.
  2. In the market, air blower comes under various categories, these are:

(i).Piston Compressor: As its name suggests it uses a piston to compress the air molecules and to make them compact and thus increase their density. When the gaseous molecules reach the required pressure then these compressed molecules get discharged through the outlet.

(ii) Centrifugal air compressor: The centrifugal air compressor improves the air pressure by using the kinetic energy of the gaseous molecules. Here, it accelerates the speed of the gaseous molecules. Therefore, the kinetic energy of these molecules can be converted into pressure energy.

(iii) Positive Displacement air compressor: The positive displacement air compressor works on improving the air pressure in the, air blower. This improved air pressure is achieved by compressing the gas which leads to changes in the unit gas volume. When the volume of the gas changes then molecules space also changes which leads to a compact and inert gaseous structure. Therefore, the density of this structure increases and thus the air pressure.

3.. As earlier said there are various air compressors available in the market. But, the use of these compressors depends upon its application and industrial requirements. The mostly used compressors are-

(i). Piston compressor(ii) Screw compressor(iii)Centrifugal air Compressor(iv)Slide air compressor(v)Scroll air compressor

  1. However, the selection of the air blower is based on its working principle and the amount of pressure required in that particular work.
  2. Generally, the ultimate pressure in the air compressor must be 20% more than the maximum pressure in the air compressor.
  3. The discharge pressure is further divided into the following categories:

(i). Low pressure where pressure difference varies from 0.7 to 1.0 MPa.(ii). In medium pressure, the pressure variation takes place from 1.0 to 10 MPa.(iii) High pressure mostly uses in the industrial sector where the pressure gradient is about 10 to 100 MPa.(iv) The ultimate pressure which is called ultra-high pressure in an air compressor is above 100 MPa.

Suction Based Device- Vacuum Pump1). A vacuum pump is a suction device that draws inert air present in the chamber by creating a void space or vacuum in that chamber. By this, it actually creates a partial vacuum pressure which is very less than the air pressure.

2.. This vacuum pressure can be generated by any of these methods:

(i). Positive displacement vacuum pump: In a positive displacement vacuum pump, the volume of the fluid is taken as a constant. Here, it has two cavities of different sizes on the suction side as well as on the discharge side. Fluid flows from the expandable cavity present at the suction side and released from the narrow cavity on the discharge side. (ii). Moment transfer vacuum pump: In this pump, the gaseous molecules are transported from the vacuum side by accelerating the speed of these molecules to the exhaust side. Although this transformation of molecules only occurs when the air pressure is below 0.1 MPa.(iii). Regenerative vacuum pump: The regenerative vacuum pump is generally used vortex action of a fluid usually air is used.

3.. In general, the vacuum pressure should be less than 101.3 KPa. And, also the vacuum gradient should be about 1 Pa.
