Windows has always suffered a variety of different icons, sometimes decades old, and Microsoft originally tried to simplify some of them in Windows 10 when it was introduced almost five years ago. Microsoft's updated Edge browser also has a new icon, and even Office has a more modern logo.

Microsoft chose simplified monochrome icons, but it is designed for brightly colored thumbnails that never really resonated with application developers and Windows 10 users. Microsoft has also redesigned its Office icons and designs with new options. for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and maintaining the familiarity of Windows users. "Using the Fluent design system, these design changes have also been extended to mobile versions of office applications. Microsoft has also focused on the Fluent design system for a variety of mobile applications. Changes have been made to many integrated Windows 10 application icons today, but more will be added in the coming months. It is part of what the company calls "a multi-year effort by Microsoft design teams to rethink our symbols."

Microsoft began today to introduce new colorful icons of applications in Windows 10 that modify the appearance of the operating system. The Microsoft design team is now working together internally on what the company calls "open source." Updates to a variety of Windows 10 integrated applications are now available for Windows 10 fast ring testers with new application icons that meet Microsoft's fluid design principles.

The new Push icon is part of a broader Microsoft Fluent Design initiative to modernize software and business services. All these new icons appear in Windows 10X, a variant of the operating system for dual-screen devices. Windows 10 on common laptops and desktops is still significantly updated, but it is not clear if the new Windows logo or Start menu design still appears.

Calculators, groove music, mail, voice recorders, alarm clocks and clocks, movies and televisions, and calendars are the first integrated applications to receive the new symbols. Many more will follow. Microsoft also plans to update applications such as photos of today's basic white logos for more colorful options. The new message and calendar icons will also appear in the preview ring of version 10 for Windows 10. This means they are only a few days away from all Windows 10 users.

The new colorful icons are meant to feel familiar and look alike, while the legacy of the Windows operating system is "honored" to evolve. According to Koehn, Microsoft design teams "have reviewed several design instructions for the computer icon," from the monochrome version to the Fluent version, which is now available in the operating system. It's interesting to see how Microsoft has tried to develop something as simple as a calculator icon, and how the company has developed the Windows Mail icon over the past 20 years.

"You will see some of the new symbols today and in the coming months," says Koehn. "The redesign of these symbols demonstrates our commitment to the advancement of the Windows operating system by honoring its heritage and redefining the archetype in which it lives."

Microsoft has now developed its symbols to better reflect its cross-platform approach. We have given depth and color to our iconography, "says Koehn. "These additional tips are subtle, but they make a big difference when scanning a user interface." This color line should make it easier to find applications in the taskbar or in the Start menu. Microsoft plans to use similar symbols with its design language for all applications for Windows, iOS, Android and macOS.

Microsoft has clearly taken the time to put these new icons on the right track, and they are part of a much greater effort to take advantage of the company's fluid design system for multiple applications and services. Designers now work closely to develop hardware and software that have a common design system for all Microsoft products.

The software maker has also redesigned its desktop icons and designs, trying to encourage others to use its Fluent design system for a variety of mobile applications. Microsoft's updated Edge browser also has a new icon, and even Office has a more modern logo.
