The Alice Independent School District Board of Trustees will receive recommendations for the school dress code on Monday at their regular meeting.

The recommendations come from the District Educational Improvement Committee (DEIC) who review other recommendations that come from the Site Based Decision Making Committee (SBDMC). SBDMC is established at each individual campus and get together to discuss changes to the dress code. Those changes then go to DEIC who review, discuss and vote on what to bring to the superintendent who then presents the dress code to the AISD Board of Trustees.

AISD Superintendent Dr. Grace Everett said the entire process began back in May. She said the reason the board tabled the dress code at their last meeting was because the DEIC didn't have a quorum for their last meeting and were unable to formally vote.

"The thing is that if we don't have a quorum at the district level then we can't make changes, whether they agree or disagree with the recommendations from the campuses. There has to be a formal vote," Everett said. "I guess they didn't really feel comfortable because it hadn't been approved or discussed or voted upon at the district level so they decided to table."

Everett said the DEIC did meet last week and were finally able to take a look at the dress code. She said the recommendations made were to keep the dress code the same for grades pre-k to eighth but add gray polo shirts as well. A few changes were made at the high school level, but nothing major.

Everett said the recommendations for the high school was to no longer allow sweats which includes sweat pants, wind pants, wind shorts and sweatshirts. Legging and tights will also not be allowed and boys will not be allowed to wear capris pants.

"What [the board] did was put more clarification into that. They stick to what they had last year excluding these things, they should be ok," Everett said.

Recommendations say facial hair will not be allowed at the high school and boys hair must not pass their shoulders. Also, recommendations include allowing gages but only solid colors and no designs. Everett said clarification on girls tops will also be recommended such as no spaghetti strap tops or dresses and no tube tops or dresses.

"There's just clarification on blouses and t-shirts that are revealing...they are just adding clarification on what's already in place," Everett said.

The board will review and discuss the recommendations by the DEIC at their Monday meeting and take formal action on accepting the dress code or make changes themselves.
