Dalaman is not only the place where the main airport in this region of Turkey is located - it is also a very popular destination in its own right. But just what do you need to know about planning holidays to Dalaman? Here is a brief guide to all the essentials to help you.

Get a Transfer From the Airport

Located in the southwest of Turkey, this is one of the most popular places for tourists in the country. Holidays to Dalaman are particularly easy to arrange because the main international airport for the area is located here, making it easy to arrive at your destination. Simply arrange a transfer to your accommodation straight from the airport. The town is only a few miles away so you will arrive at your destination and be out exploring in no time.

Enjoy Eating Out

One of the best things about holidays to Dalaman is that you will have many opportunities to sample the local cuisine. There are plenty of restaurants here serving up a wide range of cuisine - from western-style to traditional local specialities. Make sure you try as many of the local dishes as possible during your stay. For example, kebabs are very popular, and you may also want to try 'midye dolma' (rice-stuffed mussels), or perhaps stuffed aubergine. Patronise a number of restaurants and sample the myriad local flavours during your stay.

Get Active: Visit Saklikent Gorge

Lying on the beach is one of the most popular activities to do around here; but in between chilling out in the sun and eating out at the restaurants, you may want to go on an adventure with a trip to Saklikent Gorge. This huge gorge stretches for 17 miles and you can take a guided tour to enjoy an adventurous day out. You'll climb rock walls, navigate waterfalls and trek along the river that runs through the gorge.

Travel Further to Explore the Surrounding Area

The town itself has plenty of attractions but there is even more to see in the surrounding area. One of these things is Patara Beach, which is one of the best beaches you'll find in the area. It consists of nine miles of golden sand and the water is shallow and very good for swimming. There are also some interesting Roman ruins nearby.

The famous Mud Baths of Dalyan are easy to reach on a day trip. Here you can soak in the hot mud and enjoy the healing properties it is said to have.

One of the most fascinating attractions in the area is in Kekova. Here you will find an ancient town called Dolchiste, which sank beneath the waves during an earthquake. Float over the town in a boat to see the sunken streets and buildings – it's a truly amazing experience.
