Venice is one of the most popular cities in Italy for tourists, and it is easy to see why with the amount of attractions on offer. However, despite being many things to do, three major attractions stand out and should be on the list of every visitor. Here is a guide to the "big three" attractions that should visit after arriving on your transfer from Venice airport to Venice.

1. The Doge’s Palace

The Palazzo Ducale is located next to St. Mark’s Basilica and is the impressive palace where the Doge of the city used to live. You may pass by on your water transfer from Venice airport to Venice, but coming back to explore on foot should be right at the top of your list of things to see and do.

The best way to discover the secrets of the palace is to take a tour with an expert guide. (If you can book a private tour you'll get an even greater insight.) You'll visit the chancellery, the torture chamber and, of course you will cross over the world-famous Bridge of Sighs, which you can only do by entering the palace. You can also visit the prison to see the cell from which Casanova escaped.

2. St. Mark’s Basilica

This impressive Byzantine basilica is located at the eastern end of St. Mark's square. It was built to house the remains of St. Mark, which were taken from Egypt in the ninth century. Its huge marble columns, beautiful arches and vast domes will amaze, and inside you will be able to see a number of ornaments that merchants brought back with them after travelling the world for so many years. It is certainly worth queuing up to go inside, but you can also reserve your ticket online in advance. Make sure you dress appropriately, however, or you may not be permitted to enter.

3. The Grand Canal

The Grand Canal is impossible to miss, and you may even travel on it on your transfer from Venice airport to Venice. You can enjoy the canal from the banks by going for a walk, but the best way to see it is to go on a vaporetto - the local water bus. Get on at St Mark's Square and travel all the way up to the other end, passing under the Rialto Bridge. You will pass by large palaces and ancient buildings dating back to the 13th century on the way, and it is the perfect way to see the best of the city.

Don't Miss the Major Attractions

There are many more wonderful attractions in the Water City, but make sure you don't miss these ones once you've arrived from Venice airport to Venice.
