There’s no doubt that Venice, as one of the top world holiday destinations, is a vibrant and bustling city. One negative side effect of this, though, is that the transport systems are under high pressure for much of the year - and not just the peak summer months.

However, you can avoid lengthy queues at the airport for buses or water taxis if you book a shuttle from Venice airport to Venice in advance. That way you can arrive fresh and relaxed – ready to enjoy your stay from the outset.

Getting from Venice airport to Venice with the minimum fuss and bother

While gondolas may be the first thing that come to mind when thinking about travel in and around the Water City, in reality, today these are typically just tourist attractions and are somewhat expensive to hire. So unless you have an unlimited holiday budget, it may be sensible to look elsewhere.

You’ll find that there are alternatives which, while they may not have the same air of romance as a gondola, are more modern and more economical. There are the fleets of water taxis and buses plying the canals of this beautiful city that can get you from Venice airport to Venice. Before using these, though, unless you've prebooked, make sure you understand the price being charged in advance.

What to experience in this lovely city

Bear in mind that perhaps the best and least expensive way to experience all the city has to offer is under your own steam - by foot. It’s not actually all that big a place, and a good pair of shoes and a city map may be all that you need.

Remember that there’s more to see than just the famous touristy areas. Of course, having said that, you must visit St Mark’s Square and the Basilica, the Grand Canal, the Rialto Bridge, the Bridge of Sighs and the Doge’s palace to name just a few.

Once you’ve had your fill of the high profile places, why not explore a few streets further back from the canal sides and you’ll come across the real heart of the city. Restaurants in these back streets will be where the locals eat, and will typically offer more traditional Venetian fare than their main thoroughfare counterparts. The food will taste much better and prices are likely to be very much more attractive too. Cicchetti, for example, are the Venetian equivalent to Spanish tapas and are eaten before lunch or dinner accompanied by a small glass of wine. There is a huge variety of these tasty snacks to choose from, so why not order a few to make an appetising meal in its own right?

If you were to conduct a survey about romantic holiday locations it’s likely this one would appear somewhere at the top of your list. Once you've arrived on your pre-booked transport from Venice airport to Venice, its time to start discovering the magic for yourself. And there are so many ways to do just that…
