Router vs Mesh Networking – Which One is Better and Why?

A router is a device that seamlessly routes internet traffic between a connected modem and Wi-Fi-enabled gadgets such as computers or tablets. Consumer-grade wireless routers haven’t changed much. An Ethernet cable is plugged into the back of the unit and then the router takes the signal from that line and broadcasts it out via the antennas placed over distinct frequencies.

A mesh network is a local network topology in which bridges, switches, and other infrastructure devices (known as the infrastructure nodes) connect directly in a non-hierarchy manner to as many other nodes as possible and cooperate with one another to efficiently route data.

  • Mesh networks can self-organize themselves enabling dynamic distribution of workloads, especially when few nodes fail. This, in turn, contributes to fault-tolerance and reduced maintenance costs. They can also self-configure thereby reducing installation overhead.
  • Unlike a traditional router, mesh network system offers a wide range of network parental control features like content filtering, social media monitoring, blocking certain apps or websites, etc to ensure online safety for kids.
