Are you starting studies in nursing school and have the feeling that you may need a laptop to perform some important tasks such as research and managing career projects? Then you have landed in the right place.

Let's see which is the most suitable laptop for nursing students.

After reviewing a list of approximately 10 laptops we have chosen only the top 3 best nursing student laptops, laptops that truly provide value for money.

ASUS Chromebook Flip

Chromebooks are becoming a common device for any student these days and that is why I suggest this good laptop for a nursing student.

If you hear the word "Chromebook" for the first time, let me tell you, it's not a normal laptop like you would expect. It does not run on Windows or OS X. It runs on an operating system called Chrome OS created by Google for Chromebooks.

What does a Chromebook do?

Chromebooks mainly depend on Internet connectivity to be able to perform any task, such as using Google Chrome, Gmail, Google Drive, etc.

What can a Chromebook do?

You cannot install third-party games and software such as Microsoft Word / Exel, Photoshop, etc. You can easily find a replacement for any third-party software like Google Docs, Adobe Lightroom in the Chrome web store.

If you are concerned about running third party software, there is good news. Now you can run any Android app on some Chromebooks and the Asus Chromebook flip is one of them.

The Asus Chromebook flip has an all-metal body, and you won't find plastic anywhere near the body. The laptop has a Full HD touch screen with a resolution of 1920 × 1080. This screen is decent to use in indoor conditions, but it is not the best screen to use in an outdoor place like the ground, parks, etc.

The display has an RGB rating of 75% and an Adobe RGB rating of 58%. As the name of the laptop reveals that you can flip it from any angle. You can use the laptop in 360 degree mode, such as tablet or laptop mode.

When it comes to memory, it comes with 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. The processor inside the Chromebook that you will find is Intel Core m3. You can easily run multiple tabs in Chrome, open Google documents or any other tasks at the same time, you will have no problem multitasking on this machine.

This Chromebook weighs just 2.65 lbs (1.2 kg), which is easy to carry anywhere, especially from home to school / university. A lightweight laptop is always a good thing for nursing students.

There are 2 USB Type-C (one on each side) and a Micro-SD card slot. The keyboard and trackpad of this laptop are average. The keyboard itself is great, it has a backlight that will be useful when using the laptop at night.

The 39 watt-hour battery in the Chromebook Flip can easily last up to 8 hours on a single charge. This is important to any student. You must have a laptop with a long-lasting battery to take it to school or university without a problem.

2. Dell XPS 13

The Dell XPS line is not a secret because everyone knows it is a high quality line of Dell products. The Dell XPS 13 here is a late 2017 model, but with the latest Intel processor i.e.Intel 8th Generation Quad-Core i5-8250U.

The XPS 13 has a 13.3-inch infinity touch screen with a matte finish. The few bezels are quite attractive and it's one of the highlights of this amazing laptop. I would say that the screen produces good color contrast and the viewing angles of this laptop are excellent.

You'll find aluminum in the body of this laptop and carbon fiber in the keyboard and trackpad area. Build quality is robust on this machine and there is nothing to complain about.

When it comes to memory, Dell has offered 128GB M.2 SSD and 8GB DDR3 RAM, which is well suited for multitasking with ease. The performance on this machine is top notch and the latest Core i5-8250U is a nice upgrade from its previous generation i.e.Intel Core i5-7200U.

The keyboard and trackpad are one of the best in the business, I'd say. The port selection for this laptop is not bad at all. There are 2 USB 3.0, 1 USB Type-C (Thunderbolt 3), and a full-size SD card slot. An additional useful feature about this XPS 13 is that it has a fingerprint reader to unlock the screen.

The Dell XPS 13 9360 also weighs similar to the previous Asus Chromebook Flip, i.e. 2.7 pounds (1.2 kg). You can easily carry this laptop in your school / university bag.

And finally, the battery life. According to Telegraph, the battery can last up to 12-15 hours, but I'd say it's safe to assume a 10-hour battery life on average. A 10-hour battery life in a powerful machine like this is a very good job from Dell, I'd say.

3. Asus Vivobook 14

This Asus Vivobook is a budget Asus laptop. Based on specs and quality, this is one of the best laptops for a nursing student.

Asus Vivobook 14 Features:

Intel Core i5-8265U processor (4 cores, 6 MB Cache, 1.6 GHz up to 3.9 GHz)

8 GB DDR4, 2400 MHz memory

The Vivobook comes with a 14-inch screen that is sharp and bright. This laptop comes with 256GB of SSD storage and 8GB of DDR4 RAM. The Vivobook comes with the Intel Core i5-8265U processor.

What you should consider before buying the best laptop to study nursing

We've featured our list of the best nursing student laptops. But if you still haven't found your perfect choice. You can find it yourself by following this little guide.

1. Performance

Storage

These days you shouldn't buy a laptop with a hard drive unless you're on a very small budget. If you have a budget of more than $ 400 or $ 500, then you should always go for a laptop with SSDs. They are much faster than with a normal hard disk.

You shouldn't choose a laptop that has less than 128GB SSD except Chromebooks. Always looking to go above 128GB but not below that.

Processor

Target Core i5 processors if you're on a budget. It will have a faster performance than the Core i3 processor and it won't cost you much. If you are on a budget, then the Core i3 laptop would be fine for you. I will not suggest a Core i7 processor laptop for nursing school as it will cost you more and a nursing student might not need such high powered notebooks.

If you are buying a multipurpose laptop, such as nursing school, entertainment, games, etc., you can go for a Core i7 laptop. If not, I suggest you go for the Core i3 or Core i7 machines and save your money.

RAM

You shouldn't choose a laptop with 2GB of RAM at any cost because it can't manage too many things at once. Always go for 4GB RAM and it won't cost you that much. I repeat again, never look for a 2GB RAM model.

2. Portability

The laptops on this list are lightweight and portable. You can choose any of them.

The ideal weights of different laptop sizes are

  1. 10-12.5? = Up to 2.7 pounds (1.22 kg)
  2. 13? = Up to 3 pounds (1.36 kg)
  3. 14-15? = Up to 5 pounds (2.26 kg)
3. Battery life

This has to be the most important aspect of a laptop for a student who takes his luggage to a school or university. You should never buy a laptop that has less than 6 hours of battery life. If you are not going to take your laptop to school / university and use it at home, you may not have any problems.

MacBook Air has the best 12-hour battery life on this list. You should choose it if your main preference is a long-lasting battery.

4. Operating system:

Both Mac OS and Windows would be fine for nursing students. You should receive recommendations from your institute about the software requirements and which operating system suits you best. And based on that, you can make your decision.

I am not going to debate which operating system is the best for you. Both Windows and Mac OS have their own pros and cons. MacBooks are generally expensive, but they offer a different kind of performance, while you can easily get a Windows laptop at a very affordable price.

If you can buy a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro, I would suggest that you do so without question, or else you can always go for a good Windows machine.

Therefore, these factors are very important and should be considered before purchasing a laptop for a nursing student. There are many other aspects to consider, but they are not as important as the previous one. If you're curious to know about those additional features, here they are.

1. Screen type: IPS VS TN panel (IPS is better in most cases)

2. Screen size: depends on your choice.

2. Graphics card: If you are an avid gamer, you should get a laptop with a dedicated graphics card. None of the above mentioned laptops has a dedicated graphics card. You should read our post here, where we've talked about the best gaming notebooks with a dedicated graphics card.

Conclusion:

These days, all of the students are busy with studies and don't have the time to do proper research on the devices they buy and that is why I wrote this post to help you choose the right laptop.
