With all the health risks that people are subject to everyday, it is only practical for people to find ways to protect themselves and their family from everyday hazards of chemicals and other toxins that are ever present in the environment. Just the same, you should always be careful when shopping for products that claim all kinds of health benefits. While the market is filled with all sorts of organic, natural and healthy products, not all of these things live up to their claims and up to your expectations. Avoid getting your hard earned money ripped off by fakers and know how to choose real, natural, organic mattresses using these guidelines:

  • Search for organic fabrics. One main thing to look for is unbleached 100% organic cotton that has not been treated with harsh chemicals. According to studies, about 25% of the world's chemical pesticides are used on cotton crops. While it may seem inevitable to get exposed to these toxins, you can avoid them by looking for USDA/NOP, (United States Dept of Agriculture/National Organic Program) wording, when looking for organic latex mattresses. Make sure that you choose a mattress that is organic all the way through, from its top, fill, and backing. Look for an organic top layer of 100% organic cotton fabric. Next, look for wool under the cotton fabric. This is your natural fire retardant. Inside these fabrics and materials you will find a central core of natural latex from Sri-Lanka or Malaysia. This will be the best options for your mattress.
  • If you prefer latex, go for natural latex instead of synthetic options. Natural latex is an excellent choice compared to synthetic and latex blends with varying portions of synthetic and natural content. Natural latex is healthier and generally more durable, offering more consistency even with years of use. Expect 25 years out of Sri-Lankan, or Malaysian latex.
  • Avoid coils and springs. While these types of mattresses are generally inexpensive, they may not be the healthiest option as spring systems usually create electromagnetic fields, (EMF"S). These fields are something you might want to err on the side of caution about.
  • Lastly, only buy from trusted suppliers of best organic, natural and latex mattresses that offer products from well-respected and established mattress manufacturers. Choose a company that has a good collection of products that you can select from, so you won't have to settle for less than what your family needs.
